Pretty good list, if those a/v apps are missing a virus, use avira, or pctools a/v from download.com. Another great online free a/v app, trend micro housecall. One more program i cant live without, is eusing free registry cleaner, ive used for years even at work, never once removed the wrong thing, and can restore what it fixes just in case, got it at download.com as well!!!

Don't forget...

Don't forget Autoruns from SysInternals.
And update new UBCDs at least weekly.

You'll never use most of those. You'll find that you have a few that you use the most and only pull the others out in dire emergencies.

Yea. I have the whole Sysinternals suite, I've heard it is good stuff; but never really messed with it. So you think I have to much software?

Never!!!

DBAN and memtest are on UBCD4Win though. You can also put on the Acronis plugin. Yes I love UBCD4Win.

Lately (due to the Antivirus XP 2008) I have also been carrying around reg tweak #128 from Kellys Korner, to enable background and screensaver changing. Also I have Norton and Mcafee removal tools, but I guess you could just download these. SP3 and SP1 technician ISO versions come in handy too. I carry the vista and xp ophcrack CDs, as resetting the passwords can sometimes corrupt profiles.

I don't do this but I probably should: your favorite pdf reader, java, 7zip, etc, you know, the stuff we put on our computers as soon as we get them but take for granted and forget about. I also gotta start using driverpacks.

You definitely have a good start. What will end up happening is eventually you will need a tool that you don't have, so you'll download it and add it, and then you won't use it again for a long time, but that's just how it is. It will grow over time, so it's important to look back every 6 months or so and take an inventory. You don't really need to delete stuff that is redundant, because flashdrives are getting so big nowadays, but it's good to be aware of what's there.

I have heard you can put your own programs on UBCD4Win, but I haven't looked into it. That's what I use Backtrack 3 for, it has that program on it to crack passwords for Windows. Yea, I forgot I also have Norton/Mcafee removal tools also, just forgot to list it. What do you mean by SP3, and SP1, just all the different service on packs on a jumpdrive for each operating system? like Windows 2000, Windows Xp, WIndows Vista.

I you want to look into it, search for plugins on the UBCD4Win forum.

Yea sorry, SP3 for XP and SP1 for vista. I have the technicians ISO versions on CD, but you can put the executables on the jumpdrive. If you are onsite and they have a decent internet connection, you could probably download it from windows update right before you leave and tell them to click next etc. It seems good connections are the minority though, so I bring the CDs.

Yea, it would suck for them to have to install updates on dial-up. I remember doing that, it would take like three hours. Then you would run the software, "this file is corrupted" lol. Oh those days sucked. :D

autoit

with that many apps on your checklist, you might want to look into
pstart a nifty tool that can organize you programs with a "start menu".

also Autoit. you can program the appz to install themselves silently and you can customize every step of the process.

Not really, but it would help a lot. I can do simple things with it Like make it run a clean up or install Ccleaner. If I could make a few days to set down and work with it , I'm sure I could do much more. Looking at what some have done with it I'm amazed.

I may be asking too much but what I would like to see is a boot disc or a flash drive kit made with AutoIT. You would click a single file and it would start 3-4 spyware and antivirus programs, deleting anything found, run Ccleaner, and easy cleaner and delete everything found, run several reg tweaks to speed the system up and do a defrag. All while I'm doing something else.

@gunslinger

same here. I use pstart off a 8 gb mini cruzer. i have a setup similar to urs and comes out at about 5 gb. i streamlined mine so that any s/w i dont use on at least 50 percent of my jobs, is placed in my misc folder.

autoit is very complicated for me. i can setup ccleaner thanks to a tutorial bryce posted but anything that needs its settings customized to the particular system you are working on, the code starts to get intense.

i have the exact goal in mind. scripting particular protocols to run automatically would be a great time saver.

for instance if the computer has a virtumonde infection i would run the autoit script i wrote for that scenario. it would call a thinstalled ccleaner to clean the computer, then perhaps malware bytes and a restart. once in safe mode i dont know if you could run autoit. hmmm. anyways you would have a collection of scripts that handle the average cases you run into on the job.

of course we dont want the customer to see us hitting even less keys before paying us are deservedly outrages fees.

They could do it...

Often when I have home clients they like to sit over my shoulder and watch what I do. Occasionally I've had people say "I could have done that." I ask them if they had the right software and usually they sheepishly say "no." So I tell them that they should do it on their own next time. But when next time comes, they call me anyway because they aren't sure about what to do. I win. :D

XP SP3

Vista SP1

Also download ImgBurn if you don't have an ISO burning program.

AutoIt is easier if you know another language (IE just skim the instructions for syntax, and mostly just look up the function names), but it's not necessary. They made it very easy to do things like closing a window etc, that would have taken a lot longer in other languages. Simple programs, especially ones that deal mostly with running other programs, pretty much read like English.

hotkeys.

it records the mouse movements. u tell it to record, then right click desktop open new notepad and even type something in... you then stop the recording and compile the script. it works. but thanks to more then a few bugs haven't managed to install any software with it.

still looking...
