Awcleanr and Jrt

I use both. However, I'm somewhat wary of JRT, as it just removes things automatically without options or confirmation. I haven't had any problems with it that required a System Restore yet, but I do wish I had a little more control over it.

Wondering if anyone else use these awesome tools.

I generally run revo uninstaller previous to running these -

AdwCleaner -http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/
JRT - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/junkware-removal-tool/

great for initial cleanup of malware, browser hijacks. I have these two in my portable apps :)

I think if you did a forum search on these two products you will find many discussions.

To add to the conversation, have you seen a difference in which one you run first? Does one clean up for the other better? If you only use one, then run something like Rogue Killer, does one of them leave more behind than the other?

My normal workflow has JRT running first, then ADWCleaner immediately after. ADW sometimes picks up items that JRT misses. However, I have had a few false positives with ADW, so examine the scan output carefully before clicking Clean.

I haven't tested them much in the opposite order.

I usually first run Revo to remove programs (and their "droppings") that are easily visible, e.g. the optimizers, MyPC Backup, etc.

Then RKILL. Next run JRT since it doesn't require a restart, then ADWCleaner because it WILL do a restart.

After the restart, will always use AutoRuns as there is often stuff left over, especially in the scheduled tasks.

If I'm suspecting a rootkit or similar, will do MBAR, MBAM, HitmanPro (etc) as necessary.

In the past, I used this method but got burned. Use Revo at the end. When I would uninstall one of the MyPCBackups, the uninstaller would DELETE some key files in the C: root so when you restarted the computer wouldn't boot.

After doing this to 2 different computers, I changed the order of my Revo and run it at the end. After Malwarebytes, ADWCleaner, Hitman. Then I run Revo to remove any of the junk and their droppings. Not had one problem since.

I and many of my coworkers have been having trouble with JRT with it not running all the time. Like it opens the CMD window but fails to display any test or do anything and will just hang there indefinitely. It seems to work ok in Safemode (but still not always), but we had in our process as a safemode thing. It seems like its just with the latest version, as older ones seem fine.

Were these XP machines? I've seen that too, but only on XP, never on Vista/7/8.

I keep adding things to my list because I am finding things manually that the other tools are not.

For instance even after using roguekiller, mbam full, tdsskiller, jrt, combofix and adwcleaner NONE of them saw "Protect Monitor" (c:\monitor.exe, c:\monitorsvc.exe, pcprotect.dll, etc) and only after using process explorer did I see it running. Before doing a manual removal I tried a few more tools and hitman pro saw it. So hitman pro goes back into the stream even though for a while it was only showing me cookies and low level junk.

I was just gonna chime in with Geek Uninstaller. I like it alot better than Revo.

I also use JRT and ADwcleaner, in that order. I also use Toolbar Cleaner. Helps take out alot of those stubborn toolbars.

Still miss HiJackthis. lol

I agree with this. I don't do as many virus removals as some of you, but almost everyone I do has malwarebytes free on it and has been run by the customer, and still have problems.

Learning to use process explorer, and other sysinternals utilities, makes me feel like I do a more complete job than relying only on scans.

When that happens pressing enter a couple of times will usually get it started
