Error updating windows 7 on several systems. The error I am getting is Code 80072EFE Window update encountered an error. Of course clicking on get help with this error and running the various tools microsoft provides does not fix the issue. Additionally I've run a google search and came up empty.
Ideas? Suggestions? I notice it seems to revolve around a .net 3.51 issue framework update. I do find it strange several systems are experiencing this exact problem.

I may have found a solution but will have to check it when I get back from church. Strange it's happening on so many systems... hmmm....

Is there a certain update you are having issues with, or just "Updates" in general?

I have found that updating offline with WSUS offline updater often allows updates to install and then work correctly.

I don't know the technical reason why, it just sometimes works.

Maybe give it a try.

Uninstall .NET updates

I'd first try uninstalling the September updates to .NET (all of them). If that works, leave it be. ,NET updates have had a history of causing problems when they aren't really critical.

If the problem remains, you may want to completely remove .NET (all versions) and re-install the one(s) needed.

The Update system simply doesn't work. (windows update) I click it, and it seems to work then comes back with that error. I tried the .net fix-it program microsoft has, and the installer fix-it. Those failed. I ran sfc /scanow in a command prompt in safe mode, and it said there were bad system files, but that it could not fix them. I did find the following files to have something strange going on:
Shdocvw.dll, Mshtml.dll, Browseui.dll, all have no code entry points. Oleaut32.dll has error 8007008, and initpki.dll is not found on the system.
I'm a bit curious how this happened.

I was about to say the same as someone above.

you need to install manually .net 4.5 this will fix the windows update problem. :)

I don't know what the heck it is, but I've noticed a LOT of problems when installing .Net on ANY M$ machine, but mostly Vista and 7. Seems like what happens is Windows Update wants you to install a security update for .Net (whatever version) and when you do, it either constantly gets download and reinstalled, or it fails with some obscure error.

I truly hate .NET (.Net, whatever ya wanna call it). M$ can't ever seem to get their security updates straight with any of their versions. My theory is MS issues a patch, that's bad, then issues a new patch, but the new one can't install because the old one has been previously installed. Lost yet? So am I.

I would like to see someone post here their EXACT install method of .Net (versions and then updates) so that they have no issues. Of note, I've had probs. with both WSUS Offline Update and Windows Update regarding these.

Another thing that's never been made very clear to me is...do you actually need ALL versions of .Net installed, or could you just install the latest version only (and subsequent updates)? Seems to me .Net 4.5 should be backwards compatible with the old versions, but somehow, I'm guessing not.

With in the last week it seems more and more PC's i touch are having this issue also.

Here is the errors im getting.

Code: 80073712

Code: 800B0100

Code: 8024200D

Im going to try the dotnetcleanup tool now ill post my results.

The issue was caused by me... I turned on block active x on the router, and suddenly windows 7 update stopped working... lol. In fact, no windows would update, not vista, not xp... hehehe.

* I was calling people looking for my cell phone, to ask if they had seen it, and suddenly it dawned on me, that I was on it. <- yes a radio person actually said this.. LOL. But then I topped that dj, by looking for my keys everywhere, only to find out they were in my hand... LOL
