Vista Lover Here!

after all firedog said, i still dont see how he could expect someone to advise their clients to use the product when in a half a year from now the company could screw them up, as they have been known to do in the past.

especialy since there are better products out there with good reputations that havn't screwed their clients EVER!!!!.

as for your point on helping a customer who has the product, ofcourse you gotta help them even if its norton 360, but the best help for them in that case (360) is to say "go get yourself something better".

As Far As the parental control feature in Vista. Yes XP DOESN'T have that. And for you to suggest it does shows you really haven't touched vista's parental control feature.

I never said it did. I said XP had features to lock it down and free third party apps as well.

"Sorry I don't work with that product because I feel it sucks.. "when in reality its because I have never worked with that said product."

I have to be able to work with the product. This does not mean I have to like it or recommend it.

What ever happened to parenting to teach your children what to do instead of CONTROLLING them. My parents tried to control what I did on the computer and it was all patheticly easy to get around. Same with any security issue you could put on there, bios password, login, etc. People need to take personal responsibility whether it's too much tv or too much internet. And if they still don't listen rip out the cord, ground them, cut off the cord, etc. it's that simple. Also what is so bad out there in the big bad internet that's going to get them? Porn? Please it's someone naked, it's the REAL human. People in less privilaged areas see each other naked all the time, it's part of their everyday lives and my god they actually survive! :O Big bad mean men on yahoo chat? Have you been on any chat rooms lately? IT's all bots. Also maybe you need to educate your children on the dangers about giving out information and show examples of the worst cases when they do go wrong with kids. Did I about cover all the horrors online? Maybe online gang applications to join?

What!?!? Thank GOD they didn't have all this parental control when I was a kid. I would have been SCREWED! LoL, then again my parents had a hard time even finding the power button when I bought my first computer. I remember my dad trying to turn my computer on once, and gave up after I rolled on the floor laughing at him because he kept hitting the power button to the monitor over and over.

Seriously! Not to de-rail the topic here, (even though that probably wouldn't be such a bad thing) but kids these days don't even have a chance. Most parents now know a thing or two about computers, at least to track or block their kids from content they don't want their kids to have. When pagers came out I remember all my friends having them so their parents could "keep track" of them. But that didn't work out so great, because they'd all just use the old "I wasn't near a phone to call you back mom" excuse.

Then not only did they come out with cell phones, but now they have the trackable GPS units. It's making them extremely sneaky though. "GPS is on, better leave my phone in my locker at school while we sluff and run to the local arcade in case they check on me" But seriously, all the crap I got away with when I was a teenager, I'd be screwed now days. I give all this "Parental Control" a big thumbs down in defense of the current generation. ;)

At least until my kids become teenagers... then I'll change my mind I'm sure. ha ha ha

Oh, my dad is who got me into all this computer stuff. Other people would buy a new gun or fishing rod/boat... guess what we got? A new computer (well, not THAT often, maybe twice)!!! He thought he had me until I found a bios backup program and the cmos clear pin once... then he thought he had a bad bios chip cause the time was always wrong. Well yeah, I'd clear it and then flash the chip with the firmware image I saved, so it was always 1953 or whatever. lol.

Personally you need to install hidden gps in their car's/bikes. Then say Jimmy, why are you always in your locker, you need to carry it all the time cause if you don't I'm tying you up in the basement! ;)

As Far As the parental control feature in Vista. Yes XP DOESN'T have that. And for you to suggest it does shows you really haven't touched vista's parental control feature. Xp supports messing with account controls but that is designed for a tech admin not the average user.

I’m sorry, I thought it would be immediately apparent that I was being sarcastic, I am well aware of what XP can do at the account level and the level of complexity it would require for a regular user to implement them. I am completely satisfied at what Vista does for the parental controls, and have implemented them. I was giving Gunslinger a hard time – not that he is wrong per se, but we have a difference of opinion.

All this stuff about how norton screwed over customers and how you personally Are going to wait YEARS for your clients? WE are talking about Technical support not using emotions to make business decisions. As I have said I agree the damn older norton products sucked.. but the ceo of the company sucked it up admitted it was true and said they where going to fix that. And they despite what many other companies have failed to deliver on a big promise have actually done it.

Name me how many companies admit they were wrong and actually go out of their way to turn their product around? So if this product is technically better for many of those out their.. you would rather setup your clients with an inferior product because your feelings where hurt?

On the trust issue, the problem with trusting a product that screwed you in the past is that it needs to rebuild its’ reputation of reliability. A lot of aggravation, time, money and reputation are tied into being screwed over like that, and it is not easy to come back from that. The fact that technicians are dubious about this, is careful thinking on their part. To assume that they fixed it and that the newest version is “GREAT”, is carelessly forgetting the history of the product. The next update might screw the whole program.

Look, parental controls are meant to help you enforce rules that you set down with your kids, you seem think it is a control issue, it is, impulse control. My kids know the rules, they aren’t supposed do certain things, but all it takes is for me to leave the room for them to see a pop up, and click on it. Kids are kids, meaning that they have poor impulse control, they know what is right and wrong but sometimes it is too easy for them to do the wrong thing. That doesn’t mean I get to lock them in a room so that they can’t experience life.

As for your statements about chat rooms, you are right, they aren’t in chat rooms any more, the dangers are in these collaborative games like with the combat games in Xbox, or Rune Scape, World of Warcraft just to name of few. Teach your kids the rules, keep an eye on what they say and do, and accept the fact that they will do foolish things, and your job is make sure it doesn’t become dangerously foolish.

I have a 69' Dodge Charger.. There's the new Dodge Chargers out.

69' - 4,200
08' - 42,000

69' - 440 Big Block
08' - 3.5L V6

08'... More cup holders.. Very shiny.

Which should I go with?

'89 Holden Calais V8 5litre 308 - 15L/100km, 165Kw

'05 Holden HSV Clubsport V8 6Litre - 15L/100km, 297Kw (also comes with cup holders & a lounge-room style interior which the VN didnt have)

Taking into account cost of living & income both sell for about the same. Which one you going to pick? :D

Now we can agree on this.

As for prental controls, a stealth keylogger always worked well for me. Gps on the phones and if at any time I can't call you because you and your phone are in different locations , grounded for one month. This means no TV, music, phones of any kind, computers, car, no friends and you stay home. I learn the hard way from my oldest step kid who moved out in Sep last year.

So the danger is pop ups now? Seriously?

And these xbox games, are they giving out their address and other info or what is the issue with that?

I'd be interested in knowing, not only from a personal interest but perhaps an educational business interest. I know a lot of parents who don't understand the risks with limewire or other p2p and virus's, but more importantly LEGAL risks. I tell them, it's not likely, but they will sue YOU the parents. I'm not sure if they listen, or even know where to begin. Perhaps I should look at educating them and having their kids in a limited account so they can't reinstall the stuff.

Are you telling me we have all this spyware removal crap, and it doesn't come from someone clicking on "Your system is infected click here to fix it."
Most systems for someone to get in through the door, someone has to click on OK.

Xbox's (depending on the game), Runscape, World of war craft allow for people to connect during the game, the danger isn't in playing the games, it is in the side chit chat, conversations with people who haven't been vetted by the parents.

For example:
Xbox (links):
Sexual Predators Exploit Xbox 360 to Target Children

Warcraft:
Is World of Warcraft new hunting ground for sexual predators?

Well I thought you'd educate them so I never considered it. Give them a limited account so they can't install anything.

As for the xbox and all that, unless your kid is mature enough to understand these things they shouldn't be on them in the first place. Are they playing barney online? A lot of the games I see are for mature audiences, and also what most people don't realize is that video games are targets at adult consumers in their 25-30's IIRC. I still reiterate my point if you can't supervise and teach your kids nothing will matter. Do you educate your kids about sex and diseases or just try to hide it and cover it up... eventually they need to know.

I understand your points, and don't take this as an attack on you or your parenting because this is really my thoughts on the general public. I see too many little F$#KS where the parents don't care or do a thing about ANYTHING. Perhaps there should be some kind of a test and license in order to have kids. Working at a restaurant I can't tell you how many worthless parents I've seen, and I only have one good memory where I was SHOCKED that their kids behaved. Maybe it was some nyquil, maybe a beating here and there, but they were VERY polite, well behaved, helpful, and said some nice compliments. They also had an english accent so maybe that was the difference. That is one in four years.

Here we go again.

Gunslinger is the guy that shows up at your house wearing this:

As for vista I just installed it in a VM last night, and low and behold mysterious permission issues. couldn't transfer in files from the host computer. disk is read only blah blah. Tried taking ownership, changing permissions, attrib, etc. etc. Googled and tried several things, finally gave up and went to bed. This morning everything worked fine. Could have been the VM causing issues, or perhaps something else. However vista before all this was bitching it denied some .net crap permission and to download and install the SDK which was 350MB!!!! Seriously, what crap. Apparently M$ in their glory didn't want to keep the snap-in in vista because the lowly sheeple would be confused as to this .net thingy in control panel or wherever. Who goes into control panel? Not end users. And if an admin goes in and doesn't know what something does does it really hurt anything? There are all kinds of crap in there some people never use and yet they don't remove it and place it in some damn SDK.

Anyway after the miraculous vista fix this morning I could run the program and I haven't touched the permissions in .net... not looking good.
