In a thread I mentioned that I might make a video on how to repair hinges that have seperated from the base of a laptop. I tried to get it done by Sunday nite but got rather busy with other things. But its done:

If you find the video helpful please let me know. I will also make similar videos covering other failures of the hinges. Things like the hinge post on the base of the laptop is cracked, Broke off, ect..

Your comments and requests are welcome.

So perhaps you cover this in the next video, but how do you address the fact that the post has a big crack right down the side that will very soon loosen and the bushing will again be free floating? Reattaching the lug is great, but it only repairs the symptom, not the problem....

Good video though! Never thought of heating them to re-stick them!

99% of the time I get a broken post, not just the threaded part coming out. Even if it appears to have come out, most of the time the post has a crack in it that leaves the post too weak even if I could get the threaded part back in.

Good video :)

... though I'm not too sure about the 70's porno music ;)

My experience is similar to Jimbo's though; a lot of the time, there's no screw post hole left to insert said bush into.
(Ah! Now having said that, perhaps old porno music is appropriate after all).

This will be my next video !

Ill show you how to fix this no sweat. :)

LOL!

Just trying to make you feel at home (porno music). Should the next video have like a rock ballad or something? Humm... I will see.

Ok, I will be working on the next video. Im going to take a plastic post and crack it down the middle and show you how to easily repair something like this. Its really not as hard as you think it is.

When I started repairing laptops years ago I had to come up with inventive ways to fix things. Because every dollar counted. Well, I have been using the same techniques for some time and have never had a laptop come back on me for these issues.

Sorry about the text not staying on the screen long enough. I will work on that and I will also change the music to something better. I was going to do a voice over but I sound terrible.

So, No more porno music and the next video will be on a cracked post. Since the business is a bit slow I will start work on it right away.

Tbh, I usually don't care for music in a tutorial video, especially the ones that have speech. Usually it detracts from the content, sometimes makes the speech hard to hear, and more often than not, is music that I don't like. [emoji14]
If there is no narration, I usually mute the video...

Point well taken.

I will a lot of times do the same thing. However, I dont have a really good speaking voice for videos. Everytime I go to make a video with a voice over I end up screwing it up. Either that or I get tierd of "Retakes" to get things right. So, I went to text on the screen. Then text can be hard to read at times when you have a light colored background.

No worries. White text with black stroke (border) shows up fine on any background. [emoji6]

I was actually just joking about the music suggestion, though I did think it was a rather apt title :D

Joking aside, I'd agree with JustInspired; music is not really necessary. If there's music but no speech on a tutorial I'm watching, even if I like the music, I turn the sound down.

Just watched your video.

Very good job!

Looking forward to more.

Thank you for taking the time to make these.

Looking forward to more, coffee. Thanks for doing these. We all have our own techniques, but have already learned something new (heating the insert and re-seating it in the post). The most common problem I encounter, is posts that have broken off from the base. On these, I use Q-Bond and it does a good job, but it's not infallible.

Thank you for the comments. Well, We are going to pull out all the stops here and share my repair secrets. Once you try repairing the posts this way you will never go back to glueing them in - Which you know never lasts. The customer will be back in a month or so complaining that its broke again. I know the feeling. Thats why I had to develop a better way of doing it.

I will share this: I strongly recommend a hot air station for every tech! Sure you have a solder gun but this is such a step above it that it makes everything alot easier and faster - which means less time spent on repairs and more money in your pocket.

Bought mine thru Amazon for under 100 bucks. Comes with everything you need and is 110v input. Its a real godsend as you will see in my upcoming video. :)

Ok, I want update this "Fix the laptop hinge" deal. Its been a while since I had to repair hinges and the way I usually did it does NOT work anymore. I have a theory on why it doesnt work anymore but its only a theory. Here it is:

The plastic used in the manufactuer of laptops has changed since the old days. I think they interject air bubbles (really small) into the plastic during the plastic injection molding process. Therefore when you try and heat up the plastic to "weld" it back together it does not retain its shape and starts to shrink and malform. I have tried this with several different heat settings on my hot air station and I got the same results. Therefore, Have to figure out a different way of doing it. It could also be the type of "plastic" they are using also. I dont know.

On the advice of others that have PMed me and posted, I have just purchased some JBweld but in the putty form. I figure that will be somewhat easier to work with then the liquid form. I will get the JBW stuff sometime this week. Probably tuesday or wednesday. Then I will be working with that on some scrap bases to see how well it performs. I already have some ideas on how best to use it and I will make a video on that.

In the mean time, I was thinking of some other video ideas. One was a video on soldering. But there are alot of them out there already. Anyone have any suggestions on "howto videos" I would appreciate it. I dont want to make videos that do not benefit anyone of course. It would be a waste of time if no one is interested.

I'd be interested in a guide to doing the "radioshack" dc jack repair mentioned by a few people in this thread . I remember finding a youtube video with someone doing it once, before I started doing such repairs myself but I can't find it again, and it wasn't great in the first place tbh.
