Posted my first instructional video./Laptop screen replacement.

Ok, getting back on topic...

No offense to the OP, but it seems to me that we are shooting ourselves in the foot by posting instructional videos to Youtube, just to save $15 on a screen. What other skillsets do you feel comfortable detailing and publishing free of charge?

It's not going to cost us anything. The people who are going to try to do this on their own are going to attempt it whether a video exists or not. They may screw it up, in which case, you may make a service call to fix their mistakes. I've already had several people comment on my facebook page that, after seeing the video, they would never try to do this themselves. We got a machine in Monday from a customer who had already ordered his replacement for an Inspiron. He said he saw the video on our facebook page, and decided it was best to let us do it instead of trying it himself. 15 minutes later, he left a happy customer. The DIY'ers are always going to try things on their own no matter what. I plan on doing a lot more videos on various topics such as simple repairs and maybe even some more complicated OS and software configurations and custom building. The potential exposure greatly out weighs the one or two people we may miss out on.

I think techs are pretty safe.

A considerable percentage of the general public still hold PC's and Laptops in awe. They don't even consider the possibility of cracking it open and attempting it themselves.

It is still an expensive piece of kit so most people want the job done correctly instead of botching it themselves.

The kind of people who watch you boot from a Linux boot disk, and shake their head in amazement as the system installation text scrolls up the screen, saying that I must be clever to understand all that.

Regards.

Yep, because there's nowhere on the internet an end-user can look up computer repair / disassembly / diagnostic information.

I dont think angry's video will be the end of us, somehow.

Agreed. As much as we'd like to think so, we are not members of some macabre secret society that holds all the repair information in sacred texts viewable only by us.

PS: For induction and membership details for our society, pm me or one of the other members.

Ooh! Ooh! Is there a secret handshake??!!!

I should also mention (back on topic) that there are real benefits here for techs to do quality videos and to get a following on youtube, in terms of SEO.

Doesnt matter if its end-users or other techs or whoever, but theres definitely ranking possibilities for projects like this, if done well and getting hits.

I do wonder if all this media/social media stuff, might over time, become somewhat of a necessity for business purposes online.

It seems to be the way things are going :/

Lol on the handshake; also secret punch.

The seo issue is a big reason to do these, not to mention, developing a good local base of customers and fans. So far, it's working out pretty well. We get a steady stream of customers from our Facebook page and ads. We'll see how it goes with YouTube.
