Just as the new updates hit got a bunch of calls from customers there computer no longer boots after update installed after restart.
Got more calls BSOD after update and errors about cannot install updates and bsod boot loops.

Unexpected kernel mode trap, kernel security check failure after live update.
HAL_INITIALIZATION_FAILED
error message 0x80070002
"I've never had issues until these last two CU's and now this one too, on restart it gets to about 97% complete then says, failed to continue rolling back changes, with error "0x800f0922" like yours.
I have no Idea how to fix this, sfc / dism show all clean.."

More reports outlook not opening after update as well as LibreOffice and crashing browsers lol.

Interesting, none of my units have reported updates being available yet. I guess we'll see in the morning.

This one fixes some critical issues.
Unlike most non-Patch Tuesday updates, these are actually mandatory. That means that your PC will install it automatically at some point. The updates are billed as security updates, fixing an issue where print jobs might fail. Here's the highlight:

  • Updates an intermittent issue with the print spooler service that may cause print jobs to fail.
Here's the full list of fixes:

  • Addresses an intermittent issue with the print spooler service that may cause print jobs to fail. Some apps may close or generate errors, such as the remote procedure call (RPC) error.
  • Addresses an issue that may result in an error when you install Features On Demand (FOD), such as .Net 3.5. The error is, "The changes couldn’t be complete. Please reboot your computer and try again. Error code: 0x800f0950.”
As is always the case with cumulative updates, these include the fixes from previous ones, including the optional updates that were released later on in September. Here's the list of updates:

I've got systems rebooting all over the place... so far no problems... I guess I'll find out in the morning.

*Edit* Morning is here! Had a DC need the netlogon service restarted after this update, but everything else seems fine.

Ahh I see the problem... you're using AMD.

All joking aside, that specific BSOD is a driver problem, and my 100% Intel install base has yet to manifest a single damaged machine...

So while far from scientific, I'm noticing a trend here...

I had a buddy's Ryzen blow up this month after a BIOS update... might be related.

Why are they rolling out fixes with security patches everything in one update bad idea if fixes break things you loose the security fix if you remove the update:mad:

@Porthos, nor I. Today has been spooky quiet all around honestly, only one trouble call and that was a user that goofed up a file extension association.

The great bad patch of Oct 2019 is deployed on about 80% of my stuff, the last will likely go tonight with the hypervisors finally getting it Sunday, and Monday...

So... I'm wondering what Galdorf is doing differently to have this disproportionate doomsday response.

He is in the Canadian Bermuda triangle of computer users.

Not just me look at Microsoft answers win 10 forum loads of posts of machines choking on the update ranges from broken/slow booting to broken start button to BSOD and finally machines that will not boot period also lost audio, blurry video had this happen at shop as soon as the update yesterday went in it looked like this.

That blur is the new DEFAULT with 1903. ;)
Fix save as .reg.
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System]
"DisableAcrylicBackgroundOnLogon"=dword:00000001

That's literally not a bug... it's a feature...

And I don't care what goes on in Microsoft's forums... it's a cesspool of idiots and pizza techs whining their random collection of garbage they pretend is a PC is broken.

I've got hundreds of machines in my MSP support umbrella, and NONE OF THEM broke this morning...

I cleared off today, to be ready and it was a giant waste of time. Just like every other "scary" "broken" update this year.

If there was an actual problem with Windows, I'd assume I'd see it. It's not like all the machines I manage are "good". So either I'm stupid lucky, or this is typical overly sensational reporting as usual. Given the media is prone to the latter... I'm going with the overly sensational reporting.
