Hello all,
I am finally after much effort breaking down and coming to you all. The problem is this. I have a user whose keyboard does the following: If you press a letter key you get a number instead.
Steps I've taken so far:
1. changed keyboards
changed to another keyboard with a ps2 port and one with usb. all the same issue
2. tried reinstalling drivers which seems futile but I tried.
3. Checked and made sure it was set to USA keyboard
4. Checked accessibility settings were right
5. Anti virus is up-to-date
I'm out of what to think of.
Any suggestions would greatly be appreicated.
Ellen

*one thing I didn't think of was going into safemode and see it had the same issue

Sounds like a keyboard remapper is active. Either try safemode or boot from a live CD and see if you have the same problem. My guess is you won't.

Just to clarify, are you saying that no matter which key on the keyboard you type, you get a random number? Is the number always the same? Is it a single digit? Is it the same number every time you hit that key? What happens if you bring up the on-screen keyboard?

some laptops have a number pad you can activate by pressing the Fn key and something else. might be worth checking out.

Look people, OP stated has used several external keyboards so its unlikley to be that ol'numlock joke again.
Rumour has it that there is a buggy software download Constant Guard from Comcast as part of their Norton freebee installer that generates random numeric responses instead of letters when it doesnt get on with gamies or other software that uses directx or non aproved keyboard reading. Ironicaly its anti keylogger function is supposed to stop keyboard remapping hijaacks.
my feeble suggestion

Yes, that is true irony. A big problem with those free programs is that you usually get all the support that you paid for.

Comcast quote from site http://security.comcast.net/constantguard/

"Constant Guard™ New Update

As part of our ongoing efforts to continuously improve the quality of our service, we are launching Constant Guard™ for High-Speed Internet customers. Constant Guard is the result of a multi-year effort to create a comprehensive approach to protecting our customers from increasingly sophisticated online security threats."

I guess you can just unistall CG to test the theory. Theres supposed to be a link on the Comcast site for the alternative download for norton without CG. Good lluck with finding that.
