Hi all,

Got a HP dv6-6b06sa in needed OS reinstalling, license worn away so ordered the recovery media.

Tried numerous times with;
Battery out,
Battery in,
Swapped ram,
Swapped hdd,
cleared bios/cmos,
etc.

I'm at a loose end with an error message:

"The recovery attempt has failed."

All help much appreciated. :)

Just so I'm clear on what's happening:

From a dvd you can install the OS, but installing from the recovery partition isn't working, and you can't read the license key because it's worn so you can't activate if installed using the DVD?

Or am I missing something?

It's recovery dvd, not partition, other than that you are correct. :)

Not sure how familiar your are with HP products but they use a DMI system which writes certain information to the motherboard. The wrong DMI or corrupted DMI will cause the restore to fail.

Do you know the history of the machine? Has the motherboard been changed recently? Many times that is an issue.

The following tells me there may be something wrong with the DMI.

Error found: No OS Flag set on unit, please use EEPROM to set ~OS SKU~ value = 2

Usually if the DMI does not match the recovery disk set you get a Wrong Model message. But I have seen corrupted BIOS cause problems as well. Have you booted into BIOS to see what version you have? All machines should be upgraded to V6 when worked on, for the most part.

You can load a basic W7 install and run the latest update from HP. But that may not be enough. I'll have to dig it up but I do have the HP ASP update utility. This let you build a bootable thumbdrive with the utility to update the BIOS. At some point you enter in the information from the HP label. The HP part number, BID, etc, etc. But I might be getting that confused with the desktops. Either way there still is a method to update the motherboard.

If you already have BIOS V6 you can reboot and enter BIOS with something like shift+F10, or control+F10. This mode may allow you to edit the DMI. If you need more info let me know.

Can you get me the serial number and hp part number off of the label on the bottom? I'll get back to you later today/tomorrow with what I can find.

Try Microsoft on 0844 8002400 then option 2. They seem to have changed the options after that, it was 7. Anyway I have had a couple they had worn coa's and they got me to email a picture of the worn coa and issued me with a new one.

After pressing 2 it only has 3 options. I pressed 3.

The bloke there didn't know, so told me to call product activation on 0800 0188354.

They gave me the same number as you: 0844 8002400.

He now told me they don't do that any more and transferred me to a technician.

Tech told me to call HP tech support - 0845 1610030

Call this number - 0844 3690369

Switchboard refuse to put me through to anyone.

HP don't track license keys as it's not their software, call 0844 8002400

Back at MS now....

They want £65. Transfering to customer services.

They say to contact HP and get them to conference the call with MS.

Currently on a conference call with HP and MS having an argument.

Let me look that up for you. Hold the on. But like I said, Porthos' way is faster and safer.

Edit: found it. Officially only for HP techs so no official download link but instead a link from the misty alleys of the interwebs ;)
