first make sure youve found and adjusted the volume control knob on the laptop.(dont feel bad if you never noticed it before!) If that isnt the problem, go to my computer / view system information / hardware / device manager and see if you sound controller has any errors. if it does, go to sony's website and download the drivers for your laptop for sound. If there are no errors, go to control panel / sound and audio device / and make sure that "mute" is does not have a check.

Doubt this is it, but worth a try. I ran into this problem on a client's computer the other day. I have no idea how this managed to get disabled. Sometimes the simple things are worth checking too.

Click on Start -> Run. Type in services.msc and hit enter.

Scroll down until you find Windows Audio. Under the Status column, you should see "Started". Startup Type Should be "Automatic".

If it's not like that, right click on Windows Audo, click on properties.

In the drop down box, set Startup Type to Automatic.

Click the Start Button, click ok.

If that was the problem, the sound should just work. But a reboot wouldn't hurt.
