Here are some general troubleshooting methods for the Windows Update issues.

Before moving on, please check the failed updates’ names and IDs to verify that if they are the special updates (such as the updates for .Net Framework).

First, use the built-in troubleshooter to fix this issue. Please refer to the following link for the detailed information:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Troubleshoot-problems-with-installing-updates

However, if the issue persists, it can be caused by several factors. In order to narrow down the cause of this issue and resolve it, please refer to the following steps. After finishing each step, please check the result again via Windows Update.

NOTE: Some third party programs can affect the Windows Update service. If you are running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet or web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.), I recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down and then try accessing Windows Update later. Please understand that we are disabling these programs only for the purpose of troubleshooting and we can re-enable these programs after we finish troubleshooting.

1. Verify the relevant Windows Update services:

-------------------------------------------------------

1) Click the "Start" Button, in "Start Search" box, type: "services.msc" (without quotes) and press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

2) Double click the service "Windows Update".

3) Click on the "General" tab; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic" or "Manual". Then please click the "Start" button under "Service Status" to start the service.

4) Please repeat the above steps with the "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" service.

5) You can also temporarily stop these services, restart the computer, and then start these services again. If any service is missing or cannot be stopped or restarted, please let me know.

2. Rename the Windows Update related folders referring to the steps in the following KB article:

Error code when you try to use Windows Update or Microsoft Update to install updates: "0X80248007"

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958046

(The steps are also applied to Windows 7.)

3. Try to perform update in Clean Boot environment:

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

4. Check that if there is any special error code received

5. Run sfc /scannow if troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files:

Thanks for the guide.... but I'm not so sure it's not just crappy programming on Microsoft's part.

I just did a Thinkpad T520 for someone, with a 250GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD and 16GB of ram.
It came without a hard drive, or without memory so I got both of them for a customer, and had to do
a full reinstall of windows 7 pro. Nice thing is that COA was still on the bottom for the win 7 pro.

This baby is FAST, and it took around 2-3 hours of "waiting" for windows updates to check for updates
the initial attempt. This system already had SP1 on it. After waiting for 2 or 3 hours for the windows update
service to figure out which updates were needed, it pulled them down and installed them in about 10 min.

I then did the cat and mouse game of check for updates, install updates, reboot and repeat for another 20 min
and I have a fully updated system. It's just bad code if you ask me. On this very fast laptop, the whole shebag took
about 3.5 hours..... take away the SSD and cut the ram back under 8GB and this update process would have taken
easily twice as many hours if not more.

Normally I do WSUS offline updates, but for some reason it was doing a jerky thing where it would download at speeds
upwards of 1 or 2 MBps and then after a few seconds it would die... then 30 seconds or so later it would start pulling down
new updates again and then die after a few more second. Strange thing is this computer had no antivirus (or anything else)
on it at this point.... just a fresh win 7 pro install with all driver updates and windows firewall turned off (for the purpose of updating
WSUS offline...) So I had to go the old fashioned route, and it was a pain as always.

Sad part is, I have even more troubles with the windows 10 update service. I have win 10 on my person thinkpad T420... and
updates are always getting "stuck".

I've been working on for a couple weeks HP Pavillion g6-1d48dx Notebook PC. This puppy is determined not to update.

Windows 7 w/sp1, 64 bit
AMD A6-3420 APU
4 GB Ram

Nothing so far has worked getting the Windows Updates to work.
  • Tried reinstalling OS from HP image
  • Tried reinstalling OS from fresh Windows 7 iso
  • Tried all the repair Windows Update repairs tools suggested in most of the forums here including the Microsoft troubleshooters and all suggestion from the site
  • Tried turning off Windows Updates - Auto Updates and rebooting per their suggestions, rebooting and waiting
  • Tried D7 repair tools
  • Tried installing most of the individual KB updates that have been listing in most of these forums that were "guaranteed to work" (no luck)
  • Tried updating with WSUS updater (now tells me that all updates are installed but Belarc Advisor still shows 98 missing critical, important and normal updates)
  • Tried using the Windows catalog to update individual missing KBs but many say they will not install or won't download.
  • I've checked for corrupted files several scans and checked the hard drive for issues but shows good.
Any suggestions...

Have you checked the hard drive health and other hardware health?
Don't laugh, I've seen it happen.

Harold, I was thinking it was a hardware issue as well but thought I might be off base. I did try to update the bios as I swore a couple time after running the WSUS, when the system reboots and I thought I saw a message relating to the bios updating but it was always really quick and back to the updates. The version installed is the current version. I also have noticed a couple screen glitches at times (background colors show bright lines for a while at times). I was thinking again that this was affecting the update in my gut but couldn't but the how together. I did update all the drivers to be sure it wasn't a driver issue.
