besides disk cleanup and ram upgrade, what can be done to make my pc go faster...i begin to experience lags in my pc over time..any good suggestion? Thank you..:p

Hi,

Well apart from not putting a load of crap on your computer I would do the below weekly to keep your computer in shape:-

Anti-virus Scan
Anti-spy wear scan
Defragmenter
Disk clean up.

If you do the above it should make you HDD speed up a bit.

Minimize the number of programs/apps running -- especially those running without your knowledge. Looking at the system tray. I only keep about 3-4 items down there.

Start -> Run "msconfig" go to the startup tab and de-select everything that isn't vital like winzip quick pick or winamp

Use a tool like EndItAll to kill off all unneccessary background applications - however, this is only a temporary, per-session solution for when you really do need maximum performance, like before launching demanding games.

The advice about tray icons might apply - however, that can be racked almost too easily - one antivirus in the tray, the volume control, (maybe) the GFX card driver applet, plus the "connection" icon you probably get when your 56k, DSL or cable modem connects. Still - know your tray icons.

Defragmenter and virus scam will make your computer faster.
Also delete things you don't need, or aren't using.

When your harddisk is full, delete and empty some hd space will help to make it faster. Windows needs some hard disk space free to run properly, if it doesn't have that space, it will slow down its performance.
This happens when your pc's hd is full.

Read the second article below to understand why I'm saying.

Check this site "4 Ways to Speed Up Your Computer's Performance" (WinXP), but you can get some useful if you don't use WinXP.

Here is another: http://www.stcsig.org/usability/newsletter/0505-computer.html

You could always overclock like half of your hardware but I'm not sure if you would be a person that would take that risk. I would take that risk though :)

1) press start->run, type msconfig, in startup process uncheck all the unwanted processes (someone has said this before)

2)Use a registry cleaner ( i recommend registry mechanic)

3)Make sure your pc is free from all malwares(virues, trojons, spywares, adwares)

4)Defragment your hdd

Do all of those things...but please be careful with the registry cleaners...one bad step and kaput...

BTW, when was the last time you reformatted?

You can use our MSConfig tutorial to help you out as well:

I agree with linkpwns, stay away from registry cleaners. Besides, unused registries will not slow down your computer as they are... well.. unused. I personally leave them alone and keep unused registries to a minimum by uninstalling things properly.

Click START-->All Programs-->Accessories--->System Tools--->Disk Defragmenter

I have a problem, I've been gone for a week and my family's used the comp and I come back and its incredibly slow. I have a DSL connection and its unbearable. I've Defragged my comp and ran AVG to check for Spyware. It's still super slow, all internet pages load like 56k speeds. Please help me make my comp run at faster speeds, back to normal speeds.

-I've checked for new dl's that they might have done while I was away, but even so, it shouldn't have this effect right?

No, sorry. I know how to use a computer well, but I'm still a bit of a novice in this field, certainly too much so to use HijackThis.

That's why I've come here. Please help!!

Download Hijack This here:
http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip

Once downloaded. Extract it to a location such as your desktop (dont run it directly out of the zip file). Run the Hijackthis.exe file. Click "Do a system scan and save a logfile". When it is done scanning it will open up notepad and have a bunch of information in it. Copy and paste the information in the notepad file here.

Thanks for your help and concern, I woke up this morning and came to this page in dire need of help just to find that the time it took was SO much fatser, I guess my father must've backtracked through what he'd done while I was gone to find the problem and fix it. My problem is gone now, the speed has been restored, thanks again.
