Banging my head on this one.. All my normal pw reset tools(offline nt, ophcrack, etc) can't see the hard drive, or the windows hive on the hard drive.. This is a hp envy m6, and I have to change boot options to legacy which disable secure boot to get it to boot off of any cd or dvd, and I think this is preventing me from accessing the hard drive..

Also, it appears to be a local user, not on a MS account, so can't do email reset through MS.

Anyone do any windows 8 password resets yet?

Just out of curiosity for those who've successfully changed passwords - Has anyone done so on PCs setup up to sign on with email rather a local account?

Just realised those I've done have all been local, never tried an email one. Not sure how to switch to a local logon if they've forgotten their email password.

Konboot says it works on Windows 8 but not on a UEFI bios.

OPHCrack should still work but you may need to change AHCI to IDE. Also, OPHCrack may not be able to find anything other than really basic passwords unless you have the paid version of the (much larger) rainbow tables and lots of time.

For OPHCrack, I google the hash. I have not run into a case where google does not have it. It is a pain to type it out again though... Also, I have tested to make sure that OPHcrack will read email (non local accounts) accounts and find the password, not just to windows, but also to the windows Live account.

Does ophcrack read GPT partitions then?
