Why is this screen $180??

I am looking for a replacement screen for a Toshiba Satellite L505D-S6952 and the screen part# is LTN160AT01. It is a CCFL screen.

Most screens run about $60-80, but I have checked a couple of suppliers and eBay, and this particular screen seems to run about $180 everywhere.

Anyone know where I can get it cheaper, or the reason this screen is so much more than most others?

My experience is that screens like this were only made in the thailand flood area. I might be wrong in your case but twice in the past year I had the same pricing and that was the reason. Somebody said it was also due to lack of need but its a common screen for the G/CQ series and others. All of them were the G60 screens and we ended up with getting LED based screens with an adapter cable.

I believe these are 16" ccfl screens that are no longer being made. If you do purchase a replacement be careful as there are more than one led conversion adapter kit. The seller should ask exactly what laptop model you have to ensure compatibility.

Thanks for the info. Looks like the customer will have to make a decision on whether it's worth putting the money in to this laptop.

screen prices reflect supply and demand

whereas once CCFL screens were cheap and LED screens were expensive, the opposite is now true

Another factor is part availability - I recall when there was a specific 16" LCD that there was a part shortage of (cant remember the model number, but if I recall correctly this was early last year) and the cheapest we could get it for _anywhere_ was close to $300. Before the shortage it was about $120. We got a run of them and had to find an LED that we could convert. After going through about 5 different types of 16" LED we finally found a match. It was a real nightmare!

Just an aside - a customer asked me to do a macbook air screen today. I looked into the parts price for that

Total odds for her to replace it (because they are a bugger of a job) = close to a Grand.

Advise your customer to be grateful he's not a Macbook Air owner

I had a customer with a cracked 16" screen when they were around $300 just for the part. We opted to convert the laptop to a 15.6" LCD and saved quite a bit (been a while now, so I do not remember exactly how much). Just another option you may consider.

I've got the same deal with a toshiba a665-s6070 model. Must be the 16 inch screens then!

Were these screens 60 to 70 US dollars a few years ago?

My customer claims that a friend of his family that did computer work moved away...but he did it for 100 supposedly.

Yes, the cost of these screens can drastically change in a short time...both up and down. As noted above, it is simple supply and demand.
