Very basic question here... Can I format a partition with win 8 on it now and put win 8.1 on it?

There is an option for going ahead and making a bootable flash drive... and also to download the iso. I was hoping to download the iso and put it on my external drive for later use and just create a bootable flash drive from the ISO using rufus.

He has the machine here and it is running fine, so I may just give a go at downloading it on his machine to be directly made into a bootable flash drive or to get the iso for later use. I will keep you guys informed for the ones that have been soooo gracious to help me. This one has just been a bit of a perfect storm with the issues he was having with his machine, the insistence of using windows 8, the fouled up recovery partition on his machine for reseting win 8, the media creation tool not working, and my external hard drive going down that had all of my original windows versions on it from digital river. windows 8 being the only one that I don't have.

I feel like you have put a ridiculous amount of time into this. Between the back and forth and the research of looking up solutions and creating flash drives and disks. This is one thing if you are starting off and make the client aware but another if you are doing this on their dime.

Not saying you don't know what you are doing, because we have all run across problems that can stump us sometime. But the solutions offered here have been more than valid and I feel you are still missing it.

I have gotten everything going for him. I was able to get windows 8 to download on his machine with media creation tool. Still not sure as to why it wouldn't download correctly on my machine in iso format or to a thumb drive. His version of corel draw doesn't work with Windows 10, so we had to revert back. I was able to get his drivers to work for his engraving machine, but corel draw requires him to pay for an upgrade to use it with win 10. Thanks everyone for your help. This one has been a bit of a headache. Almost 95% of the computers I receive, I get them out in 2 days or less with no problems. This has been only the second machine that I have received in the past 2 years where I just kept running into different roadblocks. I had a feeling in the back of my mind that I shouldn't have went ahead and upgraded him to windows 10.

He was very satisfied in the end and is actually getting me to do some web marketing for him next week once he gets some photos together for me. That's a big relief.
