I've noticed with some clients including my new laptop that a USB drive has issues after the computer cycles through sleeping mode and running devmgmt.msc shows the "problem" usb drive. This appears to be a not uncommon issue with Win 8 and Win 8.1 machines. I did the recommended update BIOS, chipset drivers and so on first which did not resolve the issue. What did work was going into the power options > advanced and setting the USB selective suspend to "disable." I hope this helps save another tech some headaches. Cheers.
