Recommend a basic file search tool

When doing various tasks including data recovery, it's often useful to be able to search a mounted drive for file names, types of file or sometimes files which contain a certain string.

The Windows 7 built in search is pretty awkward for this sort of thing.

Which tools do you use for this? I.e. point it at a drive and search, preferably without indexing first.

I use Everything on my own system. But it won't search file contents, only file & folder names

Yeah Everything rocks! Theres also docfetcher if you want to search for the standard windows docs.

I also like Agent Ransack For searching within files

I also found that good old Nirsoft do a portable tool which is pretty good too.

+1 Everything. Super fast file search. I use it on my desktop and have as a portable app on my flash drives. Its a must-have IMO
