One of the office computers I support has a internet problem all of a sudden.. Hes patched right to modem.. ipconfig shows an IP address but win 7 network panel says no internet access... Cant ping google.com etc.. He has link lights and everything... Good chance its windows that is currupt over hardware im guessing.. correct?

Before I format it, would a boot cd tell me if its software? Should NIC work in ubcd4win?

Don't format it for something silly like that. Don't mess with a boot CD, I already told you that it could be software....in fact, it probably is.

the IP isn't 169.x.x.x by chance? Power cycle modem was obviously tried (if not... try it)... and try flush dns as stated above.

You should give us an ipconfig /all here to read...

What type of software causes this? He has avira and mbam... I guess system restore to a few days ago to see if its fixed... He has no data that needs to be backed up on this PC.. Im not at the computer right now so I cant show u ipconfig /all atm..

I ran out of my meds. I might try to go get the prescription refilled later today, though.

Anyway, I'm not confident about anything. I've been only trying to answer your questions as simply as possible, as accurately as possible. It just depresses me that you have such a nice website, have a good image, but your first instinct was to format.

I'd really love to help you learn, I really would....but it's just too darn depressing for me. I'm sure someone else will jump in and start giving you things to try, but I doubt they'll try to teach you the fundamentals of diagnosing the problem and fixing it on your own.

We need to be provided with more information than what was given. I agree with 14049752, a reformat is totally unnecessary for something like this. I mean, the problem might be as simple as resetting the modem or clearing the ip stack.

The thing is, I troubleshooted this PC for 45 mins yesterday.. its NOT software.. Either windows is corrupt (bootleg win 7 from a year ago) or its a weird dead NIC.. The last thing i do is format, so stop assuming that was my first intention. I'm the best tech in my area and surely know how to diagnose all hardware problems.

I reset the modem.. reseated NIC.. Checked NIC properties.. did ipconfig /all.. PC gets IP..

You said you tried to ping www.google.com but did you try pinging the ip directly to narrow it down to the DNS or maybe even just trying a different DNS?

Also, given the contents of the original post, it's hard to discern what steps you had taken before reaching the N&P solution.

And there's the defensive post. So typically depressing....
Man, I should get my meds filled right now so I can make it through the day. I'd hate to live in an area where even the best tech formats for this kind of thing.

I don't know what "bootleg Win 7" means, but I guess I'll start giving some real help before you get red in the face like everyone else and start calling me names.

You only asked if it COULD be caused by software. The answer is "Yes". It could also be a hardware problem. As mentioned before, we need to know if it was getting a proper IP address. If it's a 169 address, that's not one and it means that Windows can't get an IP address from a DHCP server, so it assigned itself one.
If it's getting a valid IP address (maybe not on a typical lan range, because it's plugged directly into the modem) it's more than likely software. It could be a DNS issue, as suggested. It could also be remnants of a firewall left behind, a corrupt tcp/ip stack, etc.

Part of the reason your thread depresses me is because you asked a simple question with a simple answer, but clearly there is a bigger issue that you want us to tell you what to check. To me, that's not cool. You really should be researching (so that you learn!) and asking for us to help you with specific understanding of something, or helping with a more specific issue.

Please don't get mad. Just report me if you feel like I'm being offensive and not helping, then go about your day. (I've said this so often that I think I should just make it my signature...) I really am here to help, but it's just so darn depressing sometimes.

I can understand you being frustrated because if someone doesn't know the basic underlying internetworking framework(and this is it) then they are going to get stumped on this sort of problem. It's a learning process for him so please be patient.

I'm doing my best.... but you know what ISN'T a learning process?

Having 40 people volunteer 40 different solutions and trying them all until one works.

It happens too often. I wish I had the time to write a guide to diagnosing each of these problems that would actually teach what's missing to make a good tech better.

so what you're saying is that he needs a new computer? ;)

This is why I really do want to help you learn. 100% Honest.

What I personally want you to do is research the problem on your own a little. You really will learn more that way, then come and ask us some specific questions. I give you my word that when it looks like someone has done that, I NEVER get snarky.
