Need help picking remote software!

Unfortunately no real comments about it, though I must say it looks promising...

Have you tried Zolved Remote Control??? It is free also for commercial use.
Try it and see if it works for you.

I got this reply from the RUT people:

Thank you for your interest. Quick answer to your question - it can be hosted either locally or remotely (i.e. the connection can be direct IP-to-IP, or mediated), you choose. But that also depends on the type of license - the Enterprise license works both ways, whereas the Helpdesk license allows only the mediated connection.

A couple of words about pricing and licensing. We don't use the subscription model. Instead, we offer a flat fee lifetime license for all three types - Home, Enterprise and Helpdesk.

Finally, in the nearest month we are planning to release the new version 5.1. This new version will have a lot of improvements, especially for Helpdesk use. Namely, there will be the QuickConnect module (take a look at this page
http://www.remoteutilities.com/product/what-is-quickconnect.php ) and the Gateway Mediation Server. The latter is your own, on-premise mediation server (will be available for free) which can be used for bypassing firewalls/routers thus providing customer support with ease.

Edit: If the poster above happens to be from Zolved, you might want to get your website up before posting about it...

Hi TechLady...
FYI .... I am not from Zolved. The last time I used Zolved was a couple of months ago. You are right though......the Zolved website is down. Sorry for the previous posting.

Definitely post observations (and any info for the "Remote Support Comparative" thread would be a plus). I've just bought ScreenConnect and it's really good but it's not perfect.

Yes, I think I am going to try it and I will certainly post results! I am talking with them right now. The new version they are coming out with looks to have a lot of the features TeamViewer has without obliterating your bank account.

TechLady...what are your needs for remote use?

If you are trying to get to the desktop of different users across the internet...for a one time remote support session, if you're starting up and need to be budget friendly..it's hard to beat "join.me"

Officially "free".
And very easy to walk the other end user in how to let you in, least amount of clicks, least amount of telling them what to do. Only "hitch" is you don't see UAC prompts when working on Vista/Win7 clients..you have to know when you expect them and tell the remote person to click 'em.

For unattended 24x7 remote stuff...plenty of other bundles mentioned here...we've recently gone to N-Able.

Currently trialing ScreenConnect and seems pretty good for my needs, just hosting at home on win2k8 and seems reliable and has all the features I need (Well I think it does).

Have tried Teamviewer and agree that it's good but too pricey for someone who's starting out, although I'd rather get my investment right the first time rather than buy ScreenConnect and then at a later date decide that Teamviewer is the better option. Any comments?

Cheers
Justin

We've just bought Screenconnect.
Found it to be a great product and the price is great too!
We are hosting it on our sbs2008 box and had no issues.
I like the fact that it is self hosted and the web page can be customised.

I've been trying out Remote Utilites for the past several weeks...it's okay...but man, really rough around the edges.

Dammit I wish I could afford TeamViewer

The battle continues

Well...am leaning towards LogMeIn at this point. I know there have been other threads pointing out how to get it as cheap as possible, but frankly I'm a little confused about all the different options LogMeIn has. Their website says "this works with this" and "this works with this" but I can't figure out on which computers they are talking about and how any of those would add up financially. Rescue looks great but is completely out of the ballpark in terms of what I can afford right now. So...LMI Pro + Ignition maybe??

As far as my trial with RUT (Remote Utilities)...like I said, very rough around the edges and clients not really liking the idea that Remote Utilities is "on" all the time (spying ability--I wouldn't like it either!). At least with LogMeIn they have choices about my access. The 24/7 access is obviously great for business clients, but it just creeps residential clients out (which is most of what I have).

Anyone interested, here is eHouseCalls nice chart.

TL..what are your needs? In 9 out of 10 calls....where you need a remote app....specifically what are your needs?

A product that is perfect for some users in these forums, is not necessarily the best option for other users. A lot of us have different needs?

Not sure how it jives with their terms but it's pretty easy to make a custom .msi for logmein free which installs it using your email and password, silently if necessary. You can easily host that on your website and have the customer download and use it - or use join.me to do that bit yourself.

It's not perfect but it's free and LMI is just about the fastest remote connection you can get as far as I can tell.

My needs are actually quite simple. Most of my business is residential, I would just like the ability to deal with unfinished business without having to drive all over, or attend to the little annoyances my clients have that are worth fixing but not worth a separate trip for...stuff like that. I would like, of course, to get into it more hardcore like CallThatGirl (!), but that will take time. Anyway...specifically...file transfer, multiple platforms (I have a few Linux peeps now), and most importantly EASY INSTALL. My clients are easily confused and frightened so these bare-bones solutions that take a lot of steps just won't work. Branding would be really nice as well.

Thanks for the tip MobileTechie...hmmmm....

I've had a play with that, Lalo's BetterTechVideos over at Podnutz has a video that walks you through it. It uses AutoIT and InstEd to create a new .exe. The only problem I've had is that it can take up to 10 minutes to install at the client end. Also, it crashes my XP VM and won't run at all on one of my W7 machines.

Another method is to use something like ShowMyPC to simply get on to the client's PC and then install and test LogMeIn before disconnecting the ShowMyPC session.

The way I did didn't involve AutoIT but just the package editor and some other microsoft tool that comes with windows - I forget the name - which enables you to create an exe which effectively allows you to combine files and run the exe with a switch. But the install time is an issue. I've not had it taking 10 mins but it does take a while. It's not a perfect replacement for the pro tools but it works. I do seem to remember having a problem with a Win 7 box myself now you mention it.

There are also a zillion VNC-powered options out there that are either free or quite cheap
