had a customer move her phone/internet/dvr cameras due to a remodel

i moved her cameras/internet/network for her no problem, was just laying down new cables pretty much

i was working side to side with phone guy

phone guy had no idea what he was doing (he didn't even have a toner.. didn't even know what it was )

he didn't have enough wire, so i let him use some cat5e for like 20 bucks
he got most of em right.. he just moved the phone lines basically, but the phones dont hunt properly.. my customer has 9 lines, they hunt and credit cards work but after call 5, it skips over to call 7, same with call #8 it skips and just goes to 9

my customer was very happy with my work, but she said the phone guy won't pick up the phone any more

he also left exposed wires everywhere, and i think for restaurants its illegal for certain parts of the restaurant.. the guy didn't have a punchdown.. he would just strip the wires and put them into the jack and do it via quick crimps..

i have no idea about phones, but some people say phones are alot easier than crimping rj45.. which is simple enough to me.. just takes a while

anyone an expert? just wondering since i might as well expand my knowledge if not i'll tell her to call another phone guy (he charged $500) so shes not too keen.. (i think she talked him down to half and half or something)

Not sure of her set up but ive had some experience working at a call center for cablevision doing internet and phone and She can try to rebuild the hunt group with the cable companys tech support..

Missing a lot of needed information there if you are looking for help. What model and make of switch? Type of incoming lines? Are you referring to an incoming lines hunt group where if the previous line is busy it hops to the next available line or are you asking about a hunt feature set in the switch to route calls to next available station? Are the stations digital or analog? Provide some details if you want help ffs.

There's no excuse for poor craftsmanship, but hunting is done by the phone company, not the phone system itself. So if lines are being skipped over, or in the wrong sequence, first confirm that the lines are connected in the correct order, then test the hunt sequence by calling the first number, making it busy and calling it again to see that it goes to line 2. Then busy line 1 and 2 and call 1 to see that it rings line 3, etc. until you hit a busy signal after the last line is busied out.

And no one should touch a phone system unless they are familiar with how it punches down, and has experience with programming that particular model. Every system move is going to require some type of reprogramming.
