LMGTFY - isn't as cool as some think

Greetings,

I'd like to make a semi serious post about the increase usage of the listed site. While it is great for the novice who doesn't even know how to use a search engine we here on the forum are not novices and do not need to be treated as such. There is no difference between doing a normal search for what you want, copying the address bar of the results page, and pasting that as a link/url on a response to a thread. That is the professional way and it is faster, doesn't waste others time and doesn't come off as arrogant and snotty.

For those of you who are going to say "I'm showing them how to search and how to use google" well that is fine if they have less than say 10 posts but other than that, treat other members as you would like to be treated and don't belittle them and waste their time with cutesy search sites (unless you get paid to post them, lol). For the most part I think most members here do do a adequate job of searching before posting for help.

Another issue is the semantics of the post. I remember a post I made asking why no Ipods had AM/FM/Digital tuners and if it seemed strange or inconvenienced anyone else. Prior to posting I had searched for at least 30 minutes and had found the nano with an FM tuner (but I listen to AM 70% of the time) and found that no other Ipods had radio capability. I made a pretty detailed post giving possible reasons as to why they didn't include them but they had the capability.

Well, the first reply was cocky and arrogant and led to a "LMGTFY" and he only put in "Ipod + FM + Radio" which immediately yeilded the Nano, of which I was aware. The following posts were arguments telling me that I was basically lazy and hadn't done my "work" before posting. Again, the response was handled very unprofessionally and when I called him out he cried that I was hiding behind "semantics" but the original post is the original question..

All in all, I've seen this with a number of other posts but the members usually don't stand up for themselves for fear of rocking the boat or whatever. I say there is a time and place for "LMGTFY" and it would be in the beginners forum or a novice forum, not a Computer repair business, professionals forum. That is just like laughing in the persons face..

Adding my two cents, I inadvertently prompted this thread. I used LMGTFY, meaning it in jest, but it wasn't taken how I really meant it. Tankman and I discussed this in private, and that's really all that needs to be said about that part of it.

And I know that this is the pot calling the kettle black...but I guess try to think about how you might come across when answering a question. Text is very hard to convey any kind of humor, light-hearted or tongue-in-check, or whatever. I'm guilty, almost constantly, of making someone upset...and usually I honestly don't mean it the way it's being read. So, I don't know what I'm getting at, other than let's try to all be cool. :D

If someone is being unprofessional you should report their post to the staff. I agree that LMGTFY is not professional and should not be used here.

I just googled LMGTFY. I didn't even know what it meant.

For the record, there are still things in TN that I don't what they mean or what they do.

How do you use the social groups? What value does the "friends" feature have? I just recently figured out my sent items weren't saved, so much stuff and to realize that months after I signed up there was a "search" function. Never dawned me to even look before posting.

Thanks for the vote of support on this issue. As I said there is a time and place and that is not a professional tool BUT there may be some "professional Toolz" using that site to instigate trouble, lol:p

I have used it, and probably will again if someone asks another question this is unethical or otherwise EU type questioning :)

Otherwise, yes I agree, lets keep things professional.

I have used it on other forums, Not this one... I figure that if you are here you know how to google something even though some of us don't know how to use google to search this site.

On a side note, Google doesn't search the Techs Only Forum, so if it is in there it will not be seen.

Not to let anyone off the hook for LMGTFY links but sometimes it's the fault of the OP. There have been instances where someone posts an "I can't find ___" thread and gets someone saying, "I found it in 10 seconds" (guilty as charged) when what the OP meant to say was "I looked, found __ but it wasn't what I wanted".

Not arguing that LMGFTY should be best left elsewhere but, before the OP reacts, they might also want to re-read their post to see if they've set themselves up for it.

I just want to let everyone know that you are representing your business here and a potential client may be put off by LMGTFY. That is the biggest reason to not use it.

And this rant is a new thread listed under business and legal issues because...?

There really needs to be a column just called "rants". That would be the most active column on this forum. Maybe I'll make a suggestion under the appropriate column.

If we did that then nothing else would be posted in the other column (lol) :)

Rant.....

Well, while we're at it, I think it's pretty unprofessional for those who post either a question or an answer, not to 're-read' their submission before posting it. This forum does have a spell checker and I'm aware that it will not catch words that are used improperly or from typing the same word twice. But it seems to me that one should have more respect for that which they type and send to others.

I'm old school, not a Twitter or Facebook fan or user. I'm sure that it would drive me up the wall to read some of the tweets people create with their poor grammar and spelling.

I tend to use colloquialisms which I'm sure bugs other people too.

One of my biggest peeves is the use of 'me and Jane' went to the grocery store instead of 'Jane and I'. :( I know it's my problem to deal with, but then I do have the right to choose who I associate with.:)

I'm really not representing my business here. I personally see the humor in LMGTFY, I've even shown it to some of my regular clients (selectively) and they get a laugh out of it.

WOW, way off topic.

Where do you see a spell checker on these forums? I just looked and couldn't find it. Could it be your browser's spell checker?

I just use the built in Firefox S.C.

Now about the original post. This drives me nuts in forums. When searching for a problem just to find a post at some random forum where this guy explains it exactly like you would just to have him riped a new one for not searching the forums before posting. This is a bigger waste of time for people then the OP asking the question. Now everyone that hits that thread will not get there answer and they are searching for it.

A better way would be to just keep your mouth shut if you don't have something of any value to contribute. Who cares if the question was asked 50 times before? Don't feel like answering again? Then don't, move on. Don't like a topic someone created? Don't read it. Don't use someone else's thread to blame your own wasting of time.
