LMGTFY - isn't as cool as some think

A better way would be to just keep your mouth shut if you don't have something of any value to contribute. Who cares if the question was asked 50 times before? Don't feel like answering again? Then don't, move on. Don't like a topic someone created? Don't read it. Don't use someone else's thread to blame your own wasting of time.

This is one of my pet peeves! How many times do we need the question, "Where do I get Windows disks from?", posted in the Forum?

I think responding to them does serve a purpose, actually :p

Mostly these "this question has been asked a milion times before" posts are by people who are new to the Forum. And usually the response is, "please do a search before posting".

The thing about responding is that it tells them a bit about being less spammy.

Less spammy is good IMO.

BTW, just so this post isnt completely off topic, I think LMGTFY serves a legitimate purpose also. (That was predictable, now, wasnt it) :)

Here is my 2 cents:

Any good teacher will tell you that there is no such thing as a dumb question.

Half the time when you do a google search, you get tons of sites that conflict each other, bad advice or info, or a landing page for a virus.

This is a reputable site with what is suppose to be professionals in the field.

I would take the time and appreciate anyone asking questions to feel at home and I would not mind answering those questions.

I think it is rude, and bad publicity to belittle people coming to a place with "experts" to ask for help.

I don't think anyone minds people asking questions.

However what gets people upset is where they haven't done any research themselves or they get an entitlement complex expecting answers. No one owes anyone else here anything but basic kindness and to follow the forum rules.

A professional will do his homework first before asking for a "data dump" from his colleagues.

Exactly, Its painfully obvious the ones that don't research, they ask the most basic questions.

A bad question:
How do I get started in computer repair?

A good question:
Now that i am started, and this is what I am doing, how can I improve to get more business.

Ok, well you have two options,

#1: Ignore the post and move on.

#2: Point them in the direction of the post that has the answers for them.

Some people are not all experts. I am sure they mean no harm by asking a question.

I agree that LMGTFY is often used inappropriately, but there are times when it is deserved. In my opinion, when someone carelessly posts a really vague or open-ended question that lacks even the most basic details, they deserve an equally careless response. I'm talking about the one-liners here. I'm not big on helping people that won't at least put in a little effort to help themselves.

LMGTFY is a great resource on how to teach someone to search correctly.

If a "professional" comes on here and can't take the time to SEARCH or search CORRECTLY for the answer, they deserve the LMGTFY treatment.
