Keyboard/Mouse Input Stops

Client brings in computer. Keyboard/mouse stopped working. Get it here. Theirs doesn't work. My USB doesn't work in any port. I try PS/2. Doesn't work.

I figure busted update or forced driver update. I can get into UEFI and it works there. Externally-booted O/S works. So it has to be Windows.

See it did an update the day before. Roll back update. Works again. Do the updates. Fine. Turn on System Restore (WHY did Microsoft turn off System Restore?).

Did all the optional updates. Did scans to make sure. Make sure there is no remote control software that could have "Disable Input" turned on. Nothing. Test after multiple reboots, all seems fine,

Customer takes home. Next morning, same thing.

Check, no updates. Do System Restore, still there.

I can plug in any non-input USB, it recognizes, pops up. USB drives, card readers, etc so does not appear to be USB. Plug keyboard/mouse in, nothing. Multiple mice, PS/2, USB.

I still suspect an app disabling Input, but I can not find anything. External A/V scans, dug through Program Files, Program Data, appdata. Don't see anything Dug through drivers, manually worked on drivers.

Does anyone have a suggestion how to rectify? Nuke and pave is a last resort due to software that is needed that is from a defunct company with no way to reinstall besides hand-building or (shudder) PCMover.

Is it possible that the client's mouse and/or keyboard has some kind of electrical fault that is shorting the keyboard controller into temporary lockout? If you can get it working again, give a new keyboard/mouse to the client to try for a few days. If the problem doesn't come back, have them throw away their own set. If you can't get it working, then maybe the first round just crippled the thing, but the 2nd one took it out for good.

Yeah. To clarify, and I tested further. Was unplugged for about 3 hours just in case. Both PS/2 and USB keyboard work inside of BIOS, and USB and PS/2 keyboard and mouse work booting into PE, other O/S as well.

Am I daft? I didn't think repair installs were possible like XP/Vista/7? Refreshes wipe software, or did I miss a memo somewhere? :)

Update on this one: Still no direct solution. Worse, I've seen 4 different units with this same issue now.

MOST cases, IF it is an option, is rolling back the Windows Update and then pushing forward to 20H2 seems to fix it in all but one. Doesn't appear to be driver.

So something is wrong with your image...
These are Acer, HP, laptops, desktops. Nothing I've installed, all prebuilts. Not a peep from a me-built system or anything with a reload.
What happens if you boot to safe mode?
No mouse/keyboard. Works in BIOS/UEFI. Works in external boots (Linux boots, Windows To Go/PE, etc.) and fine in reinstalls. I've also stripped ALL drivers. Unsure.
