From what I'm understanding you have a AC adapter but would like to get a replacement AC adapter to check if that works before having to do any soldering? Correct?

Well you don't have to buy a new AC adapter, just test the one you currently have.

Take a Multimeter set the dial to 20v DC, now take your AC adapter and grab the barrel connector (the part that plugs into the laptop) stick the red probe into the hole, if the probe doesn't fit stick a metal paper clip in the hole and then touch the probe to the paper clip (you won't get electrocuted), now hold that together and touch the black probe to the outside of the barrel connector. Now check the reading and write it down, next check the block on the ac adapter to see what the specs are, not sure what the tolerances are but you should be within a few volts. Now check it again to confirm your readings, have your dad help you though. If your getting a bad reading then your ac adapter is bad, if the ac adapter is good then you need to have the jack inside your motherboard replaced. If your not comfortable...I can do it click the link in my sig.
