Hi, I have a dell laptop with bad video, gray screen only, until I connect my external, then it shows a terrible picture. Just to be sure I want to run a boot cd diagnostics, I don't trust the dvd slot so I'm wanting to boot to my external usb cd drive, but I can't get the external monitor to display early enough to get to the boot menu, I always have to toggle it on with the keys while vista is loading. Anybody know how to fix this??

mash f12 until it goes to the boot menu.

I know how to get to the boot menu, but my problem is there is no display at all unless I use the external, and that won't turn on until I toggle it on when vista loads.

Just pop off the power button bezel/plastic and unplug the internal video.

Is the video connector right there on a Dell XPS M1330? I love this, customer claimed he knew alot about computers, bought this on ebay for $150 cuz the guy said he only had a "little" video problems when gaming. So the customer says it shuts down when moved around, so he takes it apart and finds screws are missing. He calls me, I get it, it boots to good video, then a couple secs later screen get goofy colors and freezes up, I reboot, I have a blank gray screen and on external screen I have an image like this (not actual image, can't get to bios yet) , perfect....

On an M1330 you have to take the keyboard off to get to the video, but it's super easy.

Also, it's a bad nvidia gpu.

yup, I'm looking over the service manual now, pretty basic, he had the keyboard out...maybe he pulled the video cable a little (wishful thinking) yes I have seen this kind of screen before, but I hope I can at least get the display to come on again, it was working when I got it (ofcourse)

I hate to tell this guy he bought a door stop:( I price checked the mobos, $370 I don't even do mobo replacements, seems the risk/reward is too high with these second hand things and I don't want to end up with unhappy customers.
