Anyone have a great, easy-to-deploy home security camera?

Nothing all-encompassing - just need to keep an eye on the babies room.

Was just about to order the Nest Cam's, but didn't like the idea of paying a monthly "recording" fee.

Be careful what you buy! My Niece bought one and discovered that it had been repackaged to look unused. It still had all the settings from the last user!
"Easy to deploy" usually means little to no security! Plenty of horror stories about Baby Monitors being hacked or monitoring other peoples babies!

Anyway, what about Netgear "Arlo?" You can have single or multiple cams.

I have the Arlo Pro units at home, about 5 of them. Image quality is quite good and they're completely wireless, so they're really quick and easy to install. They also come with free cloud storage that will retain up to 1 week of recordings.

The main downside with the Arlo Pro units is that, unless you provide permanent power, you'll need to charge/change the battery every 1-6 months (depending on usage). Also, while you can stream live images from the camera, you cannot do so continuously (like you might with a conventional CCTV monitoring system). Motion detection is a bit basic too, in that there is no way to define a custom detection area/shape. You can shrink and move a rectangular selection area within the field of view, but that also reduces/zooms the recording/viewing area.

I use a combination of Foscam IP cameras (good combination of price and performance) and Blue Iris software. They run on their own subnet as I don't want all that traffic on my regular network. Size, sensitivity, area covered are all adjustable in motion detection. You can pre/post record from moment of detection, etc. Night IR is pretty good too on the Foscams.

To add - IP security cams and software are so cheap today that anyone with any amount of property should have them as a matter of course like home/property insurance. Last month a road crew burying cable on the road backed into my mailbox and broke it off the post. I grabbed a still from the front camera and emailed it to their "info" email found online. They called me back in 10 minutes and replaced the mailbox the next day. Without the camera pic I know things would not have gone as well. (Besides - I get to watch mom raccoon and her kids exploring the back deck and trash cans in the middle of the night - chuckles.)

Unifi G3 Micro with Unifi Video. Also has an app too so you can monitor on your mobile devices and tablets. Can use a Unifi NVR, but I prefer a dedicated PC. Nothing expensive and even an old PC will work fine.

I didn't used to like the Unifi video stuff but as @YeOldeStonecat has stated in other forums they've come a long way and not only support their cameras with good software but will also play on anybody's security network if needed.

As much as I like Ubiqs cameras for basic needs, and their NVR software (so long as you install it on *nix, NOT Windows)..for residentials I just recomment Nest or Arlo to people. Residentials don't need the bother of an NVR. Arlos "basic" free cloud service is enough for many users. But even Nests 10 bucks a month subscription...1x full year is about 1/2 or less the price of a good NVR...so...."pay now or pay later"....either way after 2 or 3 years you've spent the same amount, and you have the convenience of any easy to use cloud service.

I'd be very wary of putting those ultra cheap chinese cameras somewhere sensitive. With reports of hard-coded root passwords and usernames you might find yourself on one of those sites that just stream your video to anyone and everyone.
This ^^. You take your chances with ANY electronics that come out of china!
For monitoring a baby I would want to be damn sure it's secure!

I think we're getting away from what the OP wanted initially, "Nothing all-encompassing - just need to keep an eye on the babies room."

So this is out of the question?

I like the build quality of the Nest's over the cheapo baby monitors... we can re-use it down the road to monitor other parts of the house...

I have a NAS at home, so was looking to feed the storage to that NAS. I do like the idea of a mobile app for live viewing and watching old recordings, but feel going with something more upscale like our unifi system in the office is just a little over the top.

The babies room definitely has some antics going on in there... would be nice to catch =)
