Hobbies Thread

I think he means playing for high-stakes money.

I have a monthly penny ante group, real cards, table, whiskey, but no cigars = not real poker. At least I hope it's not. :-)

I haven't played 'real' poker in years/decades. I was never very good at it but it was a fun evening every now and then.

Lets see, in the 70's I had my own sideline business as a professional photographer doing weddings and portraits (added on a second story to our house so I could have a "studio" setting) but I dropped that after someone store a motorized Hasselblad setup at a wedding reception.

In 1983 we bought two Kawasaki Jetski's (the standup kind) and loved riding those. It would take me about 5 minutes after hooking up the trailer to my vehicle, to be out of the water. Lived close to where the San Joaquin and Sacramento rivers merge in the Delta are of San Francisco. Loved having the young relatives come to visit and teaching them how to Jetski. Stopped riding about the mid 90's as laws were taking too much fun out of it... 5 mile limits near the shore, no taking off right from the beach, no spraying the people on the beach as we race into the beach and make a sharp turn... my son was riding at the age of 6, now you need to be 14. Oh yeah, no more jumping the wakes of boats, damn, takes all the fun of riding those things. When I first got the Jetski's if you saw three on the water, two of those were mine, it was pretty new in 1983. As time passed it seemed like everybody had to have a pickup truck with a Jetski in the back.

I'm back into motorcycle riding, for the past year it's been a sport bike, 2006 Yamaha FZ6 (600cc) and for the prior 6 years, a Ninja 250cc. Had a Kawasaki ZL600 in the 90's but I left it standing up in the rear wheel well of a car that decided to do a U-turn in front of me. Started riding in 1965 on a new Honda Scrambler at the age of 21 and received one lesson on it before I rode it home that night after work.
I love finding good deals on computer equipment and every chance I get I combine my love for riding with compute parts purchasing. Fortunately I have a nice large laptop backpack that I can stuff as many as 10 - 14" laptops into it. Makes for one heavy load but if I adjust the straps looser it can rest on the back seat. With all my buying and some selling on Craigslist, I've made some great contacts. I now have a seller of new Dell laptops and a buyer who can purchase just about all I can get, so I get to combine my three loves - finding good deals, riding my motorcycle and making money.
California is a state where we can make a right hand turn on a red light (after first stopping and making sure it's safe) and it's not illegal to "share the lane" while riding a motorcycle. Around here we have the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) to ride down to Malibu and many roads leading into the hills that we can ride and we also have the Rock Store http://www.rock-store.com/ where you can meetup with guys like Arnold and Jay, though I've never been there when were there. I HATE WAITING so riding a motorcycle, sharing the lane and being the fastest thing moving on the road suits me just fine. I ride with a Sena attached to my helmet so I can take calls and take videos as I ride.

So I thought about posting about my hobby searched and found this thread to necro post :p I would say my hobby is knives I like to collect them though I have a small collection at the moment only about 8 knives I really put in my collection only 4 get daily carry and a 5th gets occasionally carried as it just too heavy for EDC. I have 1 purely collection piece that is a micro knife too small to really carry but does have a real edge and real knife quality steel not a cheap toy. The last 2 peices are pieces given to my by my grandfather one of which belonged to his father. I will probably just keep the one from his father never do anything to it the other of his is a nice knife but has gotten very dull and dirty needs to be cleaned and properly sharpened. I would love to talk more about knives and EDC not sure if a thread exist on either topic at the moment but just wanted to post about my love of knives.

Carrying knives in Australia will get you a nice little holiday in a 3 x 3 room!
I know a guy who collects them but they are mostly illegal to even own! Especially the "bowie" knife ones like Crocodile Dundee had in the movie!

They send you camping with a tent?

Actually that probably would be a fate worse than jail in Oz, what with all those snakes and killer insects!

It's similar in the UK; you're likely to get picked up by the rozzas if you get caught carrying any weapons. Which is interesting because how do you define a weapon exactly? I mean a claw hammer or a screwdriver, for example, can be used as very effective weapons.

I know I have already posted to this subject, but can't recall what I said.

So that being said, I'll add to it that currently my hobbies are fishing, anything to do with fishing, videos on YouTube, and some computer work - now and then. I'm pretty much retired now.

I can do a mean online search for most anything - in fact I recently re-connected with a friend from many years ago whom I had lost all contact with using the Internet (facebook and google mostly).

For why ? Are you expecting ninjas ?
Yep only thing I'm not expecting is the Spanish Inquisition. I find a knife just one of if not the most versatile tool that can easily be carried I often use it more for opening boxes and letters but still. They are my hobby so if I can carry my hobby with me why not? I find beauty in knives and really I am a bit of a follow of the general EDC ideas and a knife is always part of an EDC.

To the legality of knives I feel for you guys only recently had some of the laws repealed here where I live legalizing many previously illegal knives. I do carry some that you guys should have few to no issue with such as an Opinel No. 6 though it is considered locking which I know is an issue for some locals. @Moltuae brings up what really makes me question these laws the fact that most any tool or object can become a weapon in the hands of one who desires to use it as such.

Photography is my other love...primarily landscape.

Mono Lake - this one made it as one of the official wallpapers for Ubuntu 14.04 :D

I used to be Canon, but I recently made the switch to Sony mirrorless. The controls are much less intuitive but the low-light results are much better.

Somewhat related, I make it a point to set the desktop backgrounds of systems I work on to landscape photos (not mine), because people find them nice and calming.

Regarding knives, what are the actual limitations? Is your plain old Leatherman going to get you in trouble or is it just longer ones, and if it's not legal to have an 8" knife how do you cook?

Ah, right, in a lot of cities there are regulations on knives with blades longer than 3"/7.5-8cm and whether they're carried visible or concealed. I've not really heard of them being enforced in years (decades?), last time was when "butterfly knives" became a thing while I was in high school.

Of course, that was back in the days when you could actually bring a pocketknife to school; these days I get the feeling that for a lot of schools showing up with round-tipped safety scissors could get you expelled from most schools in the USA.

Yeah, I remember back in elementary school and junior high school, if you were playing with your pocket knife too much...at most the teacher would take it away til the end of class, and then give it back to you.

These days, heck yeah you're expelled!
