Power Supply Failing?

Computer is really loud when plugged into the power source then when i press the power button it calms down.

Its been like this since i got it from my friend.
I haven't installed any software or hardware.

When i plug in the power cord to the power supply, the computer is really loud(The fans inside are) once i press the power button it calms down and the computer boots up normally. When the computer is turned on its turned off automatically out of no where. It had windows vista installed and it had some programs and decided to just install a nice fresh copy of Windows Vista the process was going well until it got to "Expanding files 66%" then it turned off and the computer fans where still on(by the way this happens every time it was on and when it turned off out of nowhere). So i decided ill try to install Windows 7 and it was successful. Once i saw it was successful i tried to re-install Windows Vista again on a different portion of the Hard Drive and it failed once again.
When i try to turn the computer on again by pressing the power button, the computer does not turn on. I have to unplug and re plug the cable in order for it to turn on again.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+

(2) 1GB DDR2 Ram
(2) 512MB DDR2 Ram

Western Digital Hard Drive

Some Steps i have taken to try to fix the problem.
1. Try to install Windows Vista and Windows 7

You suspect the power supply so the only step you've taken has been to reinstall "vista and 7"? The hell?


Why are you allowed to touch computers?

Possible cause is overheating. The machine CPU maybe getting too hot, and the system is shutting down to prevent critical failure.

I suggest checking out the CPU, especially the cooling fan to see if it is loose. Try reseating it and replacing the conductive paste.

Also reseat the memory chips.
Maybe run a check (good old memtest).
On some machines, these need to be a matched pair.

ALSO check out the bios settings that monitor fan speeds and temps. Bios update available ?

...... Not forgetting the PSU itself.

Since you say you have a lot to learn, can you say what you have done to find a solution besides asking for help here? There is a lot more to learning how to fix things than just asking for help. Since this is your own machine, it's a great opportunity to learn how to find solutions.

what words did you search for on google? What did you look for in previous posts on TN? Did you try any of the possible solutions you found?

There are lots of folks here willing to help if you're stuck, but you haven't even begun to try to help yourself.

Sounds like a faulty modem in the pci slot, i know i sound like a bit of a dinosaur. Happened me back in the day. The machine would power up, it would sound like an aeroplane but once you removed the faulty modem, bobs your uncle

Well, if we're going to play "guess what's wrong" based on little real information, my guess is bad caps on the motherboard or the psu.

Win 7 doesn't take long to install, so it completes before the system shuts down. Vista takes much longer to install, so the machine shut down before it completes.
Random shutdowns are a symptom of bad caps. But also a symptom of several other things.

Any more guesses?

My search on google before coming to Technibble

There is no Modem in the PCI slot.
Wish it was just that.

Yeah kinda made it sound weird there but that first sentence wasn't supposed to be there must have pasted it there on accident. Well of course it would sound stupid "Oh hey guys i think my power supply is failing better re-install Windows Vista and 7"

Sounds like a possibility, but the computer stays on once its on and it stays on until i shut it down.

Ill try the following possible solutions you have stated.

You have probably already tried this but disconnect everything except the mainboard and power supply. If it responds normally powers on and off with out fault then its something attached to the mainboard

Yes i have tried it already, i disconnected everything, and only had the PSU, The Fan and the MotherBoard Connected.

Sounds like a mainboard problem. Youve elimated everything else. Is there any burn marks on the mainboard? any blown caps etc. Have you tried a different cpu, putting on new thermal paste, new PSU? youve probably tried all of the above but just a thought

I have checked the motherboard for burn marks and blown caps or just anything fishy in there, but no. everything looks ok. i dont have another CPU on hand at the moment.
Going to FRY'S tomorrow to look for another PSU

I see mate, i am going to go to FRY'S tomorrow to look for a new PSU, and check. At the end thats how it looks.
