Happy Birthday to Grace Hopper

She presented at one of the tech meetings I attended here in Ottawa many years ago. She is responsible for all the bugs in computers, although it was actually a moth she found. :) It was from that fault-finding that computer problems were nicknamed "bugs."

Yup..."A bug in the system"....or "need to DEBUG the system".

Back then with the vacuum tubes, from what I remember with the story...with those tube based systems, moths would crawl around in there and short things out. So when the system crashed with problems from that, someone had to go in and remove the moths and replace the tubes..."debug it".

I had the honor of meeting her in person back in the early 70's when she was a guest speaker at one of the DPMA meetings I was a member of (anybody remember "DPMA" - Data Processing Management Association?).

A classy lady ... and she shared a number of stories about how things were back in the "old days"!

I've always been an admirer of Grace Hopper and there was nothing more thrilling for me, to know the 21 recipients of the Presidential Medal Of Freedom, last year. It was the most happiest moment for me to know that she was one among the 21, who were honored with this award. There are many inspirational stories from her life and she was truly a very inspiring women. Here's an info graphic on her life journey, I found lately. http://www.storagepipe.com/who-is-grace-hopper/ I really like the way all her achievements and contributions have been framed in this info graphics. I think all of us who are a true Grace Hopper fan would love this info graphics.
