Goodbye windows 8 ?

From the "metro" interface that you have to use a 3rd party app to get rid of

Mind showing me how to get the start menu back without a 3rd party app? If you can do that I'll be impressed.

Why is it such a big deal that you have to install a free (or < $5 ) application to get the start menu back? I understand that at the heart of it all, the metro UI is junk even on a touch enabled device let alone a desktop but whats the big deal?

Especially for you as a tech, and an educated user. You know about those apps, you know where to find them and how to install them and you know they will give you back the functionality that you desire.

I remember having to install VLC in every windows XP machine so that DVD's could be watched. It was a feature that should have been included for free, given that time period but it was something that the end user had to "patch" in there.

The metro UI may be junk, but Windows 8 isn't. I really wonder what people would have thought if it had started out life with most the same UI that windows 7 had.

Why is it a big deal? Because there is always the risk that some update will FUBAR because of that start menu work around. And a well designed OS shouldn't require such tom foolery just to get basic functionality. Until 8 microsoft has always provided a classic version of the desktop. Don't like aero you can turn it off and get a Win 98/2000 looking desktop. Not here. Lack of native options is what is so annoying about this product. Why should I support a dumb downed GUI with less options the it's predecessors?

Sure, there is a risk of it. I understand that just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't happen.

I'd have to agree that this is, IMO, the one real and valid point that is bad about the solution. If a windows update were to kill the Start8 type programs then yes, it would be miserable. I wonder if and when we would ever see that happen.

Exactly! You beat me to it.

Sorry personal preference is as valid as any other complaint. You can be that lone guy on the hilltop jumping up and down screaming about how good Windows 8 really is and you may even be correct but if the public doesn't buy it then it doesn't matter. Betamax was better then VHS but it didn't win.

And frankly it isn't better. Not all around. Annoying GUI doesn't get trumped by faster speeds and a better looking task manager. Windows PCs are microwaves. They should be easy to operate and require little learning curves to use them. Windows 8 is so different with so little real benefit that it is not worth the effort. It has a touchscreen whoop-dee-do. Meh.

Not much to wonder about, really. Most people would have liked it just fine. My customers just hate the interface, and the lame Metro apps that go with it. Once I get them set up with a Start Menu, booting to the desktop, and replacing the email, Skype and photo viewer apps with usable alternatives, they're happy. Well, happier, anyway. They never seem to lose the negative opinion of Windows 8, simply because they had to get me in to do all of that just to make it usable.

Ok, This I can agree with. Perfectly said. They are still ****** about Win 8 because they had to pay a tech to come out and make it work correctly and give them back the functionality of their perfectly usable and rock solid Win 7. There was no need for Win 8.

I didnt read ever post here but i think windows 8 runs well! not keen on the metro style system but its an alright os when you add the classic shell. I dont understand why thy didnt release two options! Windows home has metro and pro had desktop which option for metro!! that what i would have done

Metro should have been optional peroid. The first boot wizard should have asked which you preferred and had a selector to enable or disable Metro in control panel. That small implementation would have saved face from day 1.

As an OS it isn't terrible like Vista was as birth. It has no real advantage over Windows 7 though. It seemed to be a rushed implementation to show off new touchscreen hardware. I think everyday home desktop and business use was not really in mind.

Windows 7 is still the way I go for my tech workstation. I run Ubuntu, Zorin OS and Mint on my pleasure machines.

I think once you get a Start Menu that Windows 8 is better than 7. Under the hood I think it is a superior OS.

The problem is the Start Screen and lack of Start Menu. With Classic Shell, you are done, and Windows 8 from then on is great.

I use startisback but for the most part I agree. Once you turn it back into Windows 7 its great. I still don't like the menu structure though.

Metro should have been optional peroid.

Besides the start screen, it IS completely optional. You don't need to use ANY metro apps at all. I sure don't.

Is the start screen really that bad to you guys? I like it better than the pop up menu from vista/7 to be honest.

Windows 8. Heh. They took out good features. As I said, if they'd have made metro optional and had a traditional start menu, home run. They even took out the wifi profile manager in the network and sharing center under control panel.

As far as Metro, I can live with it, but find vs looking for the proper tile, it's easier to just search. I think the point is they should not have forced it on people. That's what made me angry. Good riddance to Windows 8.

Windows Start Screen should've been it's own OS, like Windows for Tablets while OEM's sold Windows 7. They should not mix Tablet with Desktop, very different use cases.

They put Windows on tablets (XP days), it was not good.
They put Tablet OS on Desktop, not good (unless you remove the tablet OS).

Windows 8 on Surface/Tablet is fine, but that is a very different device than a Tower PC (even a laptop)
