Do any of you guys use windows server backup?

I use it in a few client sites. It works well if you're able to dedicate a disk for the backups. My typical setup when using Windows Backup is to do full server backups to an iSCSI volume on a NAS while handling the day-to-day file backups with my online backup solution...

Yes...although I prefer storagecraft...I have some clients with basic simple networks that I utilize the native backup.

I've used NTBackup a lot in older servers too...03, 00. In all honesty I find it more reliable than some of the 3rd party solutions like Symantsuck Bloatup..I mean...Backup Exec.

I just recently gave it a try, trying to use a schtask weekly backup and I could not get it to work. The task would stay running for an unlimited amount of time just to see how it would work. Can you look over the tasks action command and tell me what I did wrong?

START BACKUP -backupTarget:M: -include:C: -allCritical -systemState -vssFull

This is set with all highest permissions and told to run under my credentials and I've tried it under system credentials too. Both without having to be logged in.

Yea I'm hating the price tag of Symantec backup exec, but it has worked perfect for me in the past (when you eventually get it working exactly how you want it). I definitely would not mind learning about a better and more affordable tool out there.

I always heard it called fuckup exec. (sorry...)

I use Backup Assist which is a shell that runs on top of the native Windows Backup system.

I was trying to be nice so as not to rile up the mods here! :D

But I'd agree with you! Spend more time fixing and patching and updating and troubleshooting that software than you do on the servers they're backingup!

Always wanted to check out Backup Assist a lot more back in the day. But I'm so focused on full image backups now with ease of importing into a hypervisor..I'm lovin' StorageCraft.

I'll stare at that when I have office time (if nobody has by then)...still home and about to leave to make some onsites around town.

I'm loving the features of StorageCraft, but the price tag is ouch. Probably is way more worth it though. You are 100% correct about backup exec. I simply never do the updates to them because I've come to realize that the updates break more than they fix, so unless you actually see an issue with how the backups are being done, then dont update be.

I'm trying out backup assist atm and it's setup is kind of confusing. Makes it look like I can backup exchange but not the file system, or backup the file system and not exchange.

I've got a client that I just landed that is using BE. Trying to make that SOB behave. I hate telling clients that they wasted there money and need to try some other software package. It's too easy to come across as trying to gouge them.

I find it a little less than BackupExec equivalent products.

It's a cool history re: StorageCraft.
The guys that started the company, there are 4 of them, years ago they started a company called PowerQuest. Those of you guys that are old timers in IT like me...may remember that name brand from back in the DOS and Win3 days.."PQDI.EXE". :D

Symantec bought up PowerQuest (and destroyed it..just like they do with many other things). However...those 4 guys cooked up StorageCraft and ...the rest is history. Rather newer "brand name"..hasn't been around very long, but the people and technology have.

I LOVED PQ! I knew symantec bought them up and thats why I used it. I never knew they were the ones to make that. I'm seeing storagecraft for servers at around $900 and I'm seeing newest backup exec for servers at around $758.

I was going by Symantecs website..their MSRP
http://buy.symantec.com/estore/cate...ct/productCode/BEC-WSBE-EXP-LEM_2012_12MO_PC/

I had starting at $1,172.00 and on up from there depending on agents.

I am looking into storagecrafts reseller and other programs to see what they offer and I'm waiting on a call back.

What have you been getting it at? Mind sharing a vendor? :)

*edit* wow these guys blow symantec away. After talking to a few others and looking at their youtube channel. They make symantec look like a huge waste of money.

WOW this I had no idea, that is so cool! I used pqdi.exe back in the day :)

Another long time Backup Assist proponent here. Simple and to the point. Works extremely well and far less expensive than than fuckup exec (lol)

Shoot me a PM, I can get you a MUCH better Price on Storage Craft.....

Wondering how many of you guys actually use and trust the new windows server backup on 2008+ servers.

Various clients of mine use it and it works very well. I've had cause to recover individual files, system state and whole system disk images from it and it worked AOK each time.

For a small business it seems ideal. I set them up with 2+ portable USB drives so they can take one home and swap them every week for offsite storage.
