Needing to rant after I've lost control of my account at LinkedIn (haven't logged in 5+ years) and trying to work through the labyrinth of details and dead-end instructions (endless spinning web waiting wheels) to regain it is so frustrating I've about given up. I'm tired of every consulting and headhunting agency using it to pound me with emails. My account was/is tied to my domained email. When I closed up my business for retirement I closed my domained email (First@Lastname.com) so there is no way for LinkedIn to confirm a password change. I reactivated my domain email once to regain control of an old Facebook account. Guess I may have to do that again. The reason for this rant is a reminder to others not to make the dumb mistake I did and I've never seen such a big company (LinkedIn) so walled off from contact. Frustrating!!!

Email is such a big part of online identity, that I'm very scared of losing it. I've got it very locked down, that I'm scared that I could lose access and I have everything I would need to get back also in physical form offsite.

Yup. This is one reason I try to get my clients to understand that they should avoid using email services from, say, their internet service provider, because if they move and no longer have that account, they lose that email address.

It's far better to use a service like gmail, outlook.com, proton mail, or similar where your address can and will remain the same "until they plant you."

Even for those like @Diggs, who were using domained email for a very good reason, I always suggest having an account like one of the above and making sure that address exists as an alternate/alias anywhere that the domained email is used. It's an insurance policy. I'm big on what the British call "belt and braces" approaches to stuff like this. I've seen too much (and part of that "too much" is exactly what @Diggs is decrying, the almost total lack of ability to get any kind of support, of any kind, for so many of the "big players" in our business).

My Microsoft Account, for example:

Weird.... LinkedIn sent me an email updating their terms. There was a link to login on that email and using that link I logged right in and a couple of clicks later deleted my account. (A lot of history there. Had to hover and think a bit before hitting the confirm button.)
