at power on, computer beeps and powers off. Sony Vaio w/ winXP

I have a Sony Vaio desktop running XP that is no longer working. When I power it up, it now beep beep beeps, and then powers itself down. Never gets to the BIOS screen. Is this a power supply problem? Any ideas / recommendations?

can you please turn it on again and pay close attention to the beeps, then tell us exactly how many times, length of beeps, etc... this can help us narrow down the exact issue.

I would recommend checking memory. Remove both chips if they have two. Try replacing if you have spares.

Most likely memory as the above poster said, but you might want to google "Sony Vaio beep codes".

what model is it?

If it beeps 1 long 2 short, it will be a graphics issue which will mean a faulty mainbaord (I've found that this is very common among sony laptops).

If it just beeps once it could be saying that the battery is low and then turning off due to the fact it has no power (run a multimeter across the AC Adapter, is that working ok?)

If it beeps continually it will probably be memory.

I have ever seen faulty RAM can power off PC.

There may be more parts to check on your PC.

Here is the least costly way to reset your PC first.

Try the following:

unplu the power cord from your PC and pressing the power button on your PC for over 20 seconds, this will discharge all static on your PC, then connect the power cord back to the PC and power on your PC again, some time, certain hardware conflict can be fixed this way and the PC will be reset and boot up.

Or, you may need to reseat your CPU and check if the CPU fan is working probably.

If the error codes don't pan out I would strip the system down to the bare motherboard and start adding componets back in one at a time.

The sony Vaio model I have is PCV 7742. Will keep at it. Anyone else who may know something, chime in!

I had this problem with a client's PC. After googling the problem online, it turned out that the continual beeps meant it was a faulty motherboard. Just to make sure, I stripped out the system, so only the power supply, CPU and motherboard were left. I changed the power supply and still the beeps continued. Changed the motherboard and voila, PC working again. Hope that helps

One long beep over and over should mean a RAM problem, if you know the RAM you put in is good then look for bad caps. Also it could be a bad RAM slot, try starting with just one stick, I would use one of the old sticks that you took out.

Unplug everything but the basics like power, keyboard and video, do so on the inside also unplug things you don't need like the front panel USB ports, DVD drive, floppy, modem, etc. then try to start.

Reseat everything by unplugging everything on the motherboard and plugging it back in, this includes the main power and the CPU power and all the cards like video card and sound card and modem and also the RAM then try to start.
