Yes it does seem to vary. I'm a refurbisher and the site I get packs from just needed a 2 minute sign up and then they said "you can only use them if you have access to the MS portal" and needed no other info other than payment. They came next day.

Another for Synology. Raid 1 with 2 WD Reds plus 2 x external usb drives. Whilst you cannot setup rotating drives you can setup to back to both external drives and will back to what is attached so you take one off site. Just did one last week.
