I have a toshiba s855 laptop with 4tb external seagate usb3 drive has newest intel extensible usb3 driver installed when plug in the 4tb external it does not always show up.
Always works in desktop computers running win7 also have newest chipset drivers for 8.1 and newest bios as well any ideas?.

I'd bet the laptop's USB port is not providing enough power. Not all USB ports are created equal.

I've seen external drives that come with a Y cable so you can plug it into two ports for more juice. Try that or a powered USB hub.

That is what i was thinking a 2tb external always works no problem the 4tb i'm guessing 2x2tb its much thicker than 2tb double at least so amps need to spin up motors would be double.

I assume that the 4TB drive is a desktop unit with its own external power supply. If so, this USB power shouldn't be the issue. You might want to try, just for kicks, a different USB 3 cable.
