XP Install woes

I'm attempting to install XP (Home) on a rebuilt machine, and when I get to the primary install screen, I get total shutdown. I've checked all devices for power problems, and all is working as it should. I have the CMOS set for the CD drive to be first in boot order, and I can't get further than described above.

Any ideas or comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Unhook anything not needed for basic computer fucntion. e.g extra usb devices, extra pci cards, one stick ram etc. Try again.

Still not work you can try a new cd drive and cable, also you can try a new install cd.

I have had problems with install cd's being really freaky on certain cd drives.

Thanks for the reply

Thanks for the tips. I've tried swapping CD drives already, but will give the cable swap a try and the bare essentials. This is really becoming a headache. I've never had this much trouble doing a simple install...

Stay tuned, and thanks again,

Which screen do you mean when you say the primary install screen. Sometimes the installation will run along fine up until the point it needs to recognize the HDD. If it gives you problems there it would probably be a hard drive problem.

But it also may be an overheat situation. Check that the CPU fan and heat sink is securely attached. Did the computer shutdown like this before the reinstall? Also check the motherboard capacitors to see if they are leaky.

Lastly, it could be a weak power supply. I just had a system that would shut down mid installation an we narrowed it down to the power supply, which turned out to be only 200 Watts.

Thanks for the reply,

The screen I'm referring to is the Main Install/Repair console screen. I've done some homework, and I do think it's a heatsink/CPU problem. I have a brand new 430 Watt PSU, so power isn't the issue. (That's one of the first things I replaced).

I'm gonna take a peek at the CPU, and look for troubles there.

Thanks again for the response,

Stay tuned...
