I tried finding out what is causing this did malware/virus scans from cd.
It boots all the way into windows after the microsoft logo it goes to a black screen , i have fixed the shell just to make sure that was not the cause.
If i terminate explorer.exe and start it up again in task manager it goes to the desktop.
I have also cleaned the registry with ccleaner that did not help either.
I also did a sfc and it was clean no corrupt files.

have had 3 more vista machines in with same symptoms happened after windows update.
I wish microsoft would test their patches more.

I have seen this a lot lately.

Its usually associated to the TxF or Transactional NTFS. I have spent hours looking for a fix and even MS says its unrecoverable.

The only fix that I have been able to muster is a N&P. Luckily you can normally run chkdsk and repair it enough to recover the data off the drive. Since its such a low level error I really don't think there is any other way to fix it.

Let me guess, its an HP DV series with Vista sp2?

Last time it happened to me was a few days ago with a very nice Toshiba notebook. I think in this case the hardware does not make much of a difference.
