Windows Update Error 0x80090008

Keep getting an error when trying to run Windows Update: 0x80090008 Page cannot be loaded.

I've run
Norton Removal Tool
McAfee Removal Tool
Firewall off
security scans
disabled startup entries

any ideas?

I'm running a similar problem. None of the microsoft pages or updates work. I can't remember if the error is the same. Can you download anything else from microsoft? Particularly messenger?

I'll try this later when I get to work on that computer:

-Set internet explorer security - Medium
-Run SuperAntispyware
-ipconfig /flushdns
-kill wuocul.exe
-delete siszy32.exe
-svchost talking 100% of task bar memory?

The system that I'm working on had some virus infections but came to me after another technician removed them.

I can download stuff directly from MS (reinstalled IE8 hoping that would do it). Haven't seen any symptoms of virus issues, but ran scans anyway. Tried Dial-a-fix too, nada. I haven't noticed any unusual activity via task manager.

do you have any third party tool bars on IE? is the date and time on your system correct? didnt see the OS mentioned on your post

XP SP3
Disabled all toolbars and such.
Date and time are correct.

I also ran SFC/SCANNOW hoping that would work (it didn't). Crazy. I've sent an email to MS, we'll see what they say.

I have read, however never had an instance with this issue but read that if you uninstall SP3 and reinstall it clears up. but again I never have done it...

Registry security permissions? This often causes Windows Update to fail

As far as I can tell, all permissions are as they should.

Clear cookies and check time zone and check log

Have you tried starting IE without addons or tried clearing IE temp files and cookies and history and etc.

Check your time and make sure it is set to the right time and time zone.

Have you looked at your windowsupdate.log any clues in it? How to read the Windowsupdate.log file

Read this page: http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups it leads you to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377 where they say to ignore the title of the page and scroll down to the "advanced troubleshooting section" and follow "Method 1: Reset the registry and the file permissions" This page also shows you in the "More information" section how to determine whether a registry update failed.

Well, I finally just uninstalled/reinstalled SP3 and it seems to have fixed it.

Microsoft sent me a lengthly list of things to try, asking me to reply with the results - unfortunately the email kept bouncing. Thanks for all the suggestions!
