The problem with capitalists is that there is no such thing as saturation or something other than infinite growth... therefor, it must mean that computers are dead. :rolleyes:
 
It's Vista all over again. People don't like change and honestly I don't blame them.

A computer is not a "Social revolution", I don't care what Steve Jobs, Balmer, or Linux enthuasiest say. A Computer is a tool that allows people to get work done. If it gets in the way of getting work done it's less useful. I fully expect people to wait until Microsoft pulls their head out of their collective fourth point of contact and makes Metro be optional. The PC is not the be-all-end-all of computing now a days and people realize they have other options (Ipads, Tablets, etc) so forcing change to leverage their monopoly to push people towards normalizing their tablet/phone offerings isn't going to work and will instead just cause problems for their main businesses as people put up with their old computer.
 
I have heard about enough of the rantings of Chicken Little. For as long as I can remember, there has been one person or another go on about the demise of Microsoft and the PC. Lately, due to overall slumping PC sales, these stories are becoming all the more frequent. The funny thing is, if you take the time to do some Google-Fu, Microsoft's overall market share is on the rise. That's right; on the rise. Add to that, Windows desktop OS sales do not make Microsoft near as much money as their business/enterprise and online services do. So take all these stories of doom and gloom and remember they've been repeated for 20+ years. When/if Microsoft's market share gets below 90%, I'll take notice. If it gets near 80%, I'll start to be a little concerned. However, I think that will be a long way off considering they're gaining share, not losing it.

Sorry for the rant; just getting tired of seeing this repeated in a new thread every other day.
 
Fluff piece really - no actual facts although I agree with the bit about user reaction to W8 being overwhelmingly negative.

As for people not liking change - true to a very great extent but you cannot use change adversity to entirely explain the reaction to W8. The UI is badly designed for use on a desktop/laptop - that's the bottom line.

Just like you said, people are starting to figure out they have options. Whether it be an iPad, a smartphone, or a Mac. People are no longer trapped in a Microsoft world for the most part. I think this was the absolute worst time for Microsoft to make such a big mistake as Windows 8. people complain so much about the lack of customizability on a Mac, yet you have the option to use launchpad. Microsoft does not give you an option.

I understand what you are saying but there are a few things you could put in there and it make sense.

Myspace
Netbooks
Phone calls
Common sense

Yeah This is pretty much what I was thinking except I am not so sure Mac is going to be perceived as the answer either. I had a co-worker just yesterday that was complaining about if he got a new Windows machine he would have some work to do to get Win 8 off of it and setup the way he wanted but at least it was still cheaper than a Mac.

I dunno ... of course time will tell. I thought the article was interesting in that Win 8 is falling on its face just as most techs predicted. Basically just a rerun of what happened with Vista.

Personally I like the concept of the Surface Tablet. The hardware just isn't quite up to the task. I think we are still 2-5 years away from really being able to do that. Once you get the real power of today's desktop PC in that tablet/slate/hybrid/surface form factor with a battery life that is useful THEN the PC industry will get out of the appliance mode.

Yeah, things die (or shamble on in some weird undead fashion, like Myspace). It's the overly-sensationalized and faux-authoritative declaration in the headline with only the flimsiest of justifcations in the article that mark the truly terrible <Something> Is Dead articles. The ridiculous exaggeration is used solely for the purpose of drumming up site visitors.

So, Windows 8 is definitely a problem for Microsoft. I hate it, too. But to take a look at the customer backlash and then declare Windows dead is beyond silly. Like angry_geek said, call me when Windows' marketshare dips below 90%. Then we'll talk.

Also, "Phone Calls Are Dead"? A more accurate declaration would be more like, "Phone Calls Are Becoming a Less Common Method of Communication Among Certain Demographics." This is why no one hires me to write headlines. As for common sense, I prefer to think of it as missing in action. :)

Edit: Guys, could we keep away from the Republican vs. Democrat nonsense? As a reminder, the topic is an article on the death of Windows. ;)

I'm not sure how this turned into a political debate, but insulting people with terms such as "repugs", insulting them because they're liberal, etc., or because they read one news source or another, definitely does not display to others you possess great intelligence. It does not speak highly of your cognitive ability at all. Keep in mind the Fox piece was merely a rehash of other articles. Those other articles are merely repeats of crap that's been passed around for decades. They are no more correct now than they were then. As much as I hate to say it, PCWorld got closer to the real story than anyone else has so far.
