Windows 8 ... Wow.

We've only sold about half a dozen win8 machines so far but we've not had one single call from the users in regards to how to do things in win8 so they've figured it out ok.
I've been running it on my laptop for about two months now and while there are a few things I think Microsoft got wrong I feel the things they got right far outweigh them and make it worthwhile.
With more and more touchscreen machines coming I think it will get even better. I've got a Samsung smart pc / tablet coming in the new year so I'll be able to test win8 with a touchscreen then.

Right now my preferred OSs are OS X, Windows 7 and Linux Mint 14 in that order. Windows 8 is somewhere below Win ME and Vista for me. Actually I think Windows Vista was better. Coming from me that saying a lot since I was the most vocal Vista hater on Technibble.

While my displeasure is obvious from my posts here I am still forcing myself to use and because I will have to support it (unfortunately). Some people love it and some hate it. However MOST of my clients have never even tried it.

I was just at Newegg ordering a copy of Win 7 for a customer's gaming machine I am building and I filtered the OS results to just Win 8 and it was funny to see that it is getting bad reviews by customers there.

Good video gunslinger. That is a good evaluation of its problems.

excellent points made regarding win 8 ,windows key leads straight back to almost win 7
punters and techies can work this way then just play with the win 8 as and when they want to. i'm finding win 8 really easy to use now, have been on it about 9 months now.

wow

there are really a lot of threads appearing with a lot of very strong negative views about "W8"

A couple of things occur to me in regard to this.

Firstly, W8 works. Its not buggy, glitchy, unreliable. It does what its meant to do. (thats good, right?)

Secondly, the "hard to use it" argument

Seriously? - technicians, finding windows 7 with a couple of minor interface tweaks difficult to use? This incarnation = "difficult" really, rubs me up the wrong way. Difficult was when MS operating systems really were garbage, hard to work on, unreliable (yes, the old days). Windows 8 is not 'difficult' compared to DOS and 3.11. Its not even that 'different' to 7.

Ive been using it full time 3 months now I think, and have no problems.

The only thing I do differently is make use of the 'windows' key and type. Actually, I did that with 7 anyway. Its not even a habit change. It works the same way!

All this really negative "I hate it" stuff - of course everyone's entitled to their opinion, but it seems just a tad on the reactive side to me.

From where Im standing its perfectly useable. Really not that hard, and now that Im used to it am, speaking personally, quite happy on both my work and home machines.

Just my 5c.

Oh, yeah, and in regard to 'customers' using it, no problem me recommending. I will show them the windows key. Thats all they need to know. Any end-user can do this. Thats the target market, after all. Its not 'too difficult' for them. They are end-users, not retards (although sometimes its a subtle distinction) [JOKING!] :) :)

Nah seriously, none of this stuff is rocket science. In 6 months everyone will be looking back and going... "so what?".

The thing is every time they have tried to copy Apple they get it so wrong. The reason is a basic lack of understanding the people they are making the OS for. When I made the switch from Windows on my main machine to OS X it took me a few days to get use to. After that I looked back at Windows and wondered WTF were they thinking doing it that way? This make much more sense. Take launchpad. Its a nice quick way of launching apps. But, if you don't want to use it, you never have to. Its hidden nicely out of the way. It would have taken Microsoft about two hours to do the same thing with the so called "modern IU". Modern my ass! It looks like something right out of Windows 95. Now I'm seeing other software creators try to mimic this look. Its horrible. Anyone use Yahoo mail lately? It looked pretty good about a month ago, then they decided to go with the "modern UI" now it looks like something a 5 grader threw together in notepad.

Pretty much it. I don't know why Windows decided to change something that already works fine. I wish that they would have just fine-tuned what they already had. I mean this metro-ui is great for tablets and phones. But that's just it - it's only for tablets and phones.

Windows 8. What a joke. It has absolutely fallen flat on its face. Case in point: it takes an 18 minute video to relearn how to use a PC. LOL.

Nope. Not a joke. Poor choice in GUI? Yes. Joke? No.

There are many free software applications that "fix" the "problem". Many of which take about as much time to install as it did for me to type this response.

I like 7 a lot better as most do, but unfortunately as many have already said...customers will buy machines with 8 on it and we have to learn it and know how to fix it to stay relevant. With start8 or classic shell, its tolerable but still wouldnt install it on any of my systems over 7 yet.

I have had a couple clients call in just about in tears over Windows 8. The most common complaint is that their programs don't work and they find it extremely frustrating to use. Some have returned laptops and bought Windows 7 laptops from me instead so it's good for business :D

I have come across several printers and scanners without drivers, but no applications yet.

What programs have they found that won't run?

One client had some Teleprompter software, another an old music app that didn't want to play nice, even in compatibility mode (buttons all wonky)

Personally, Windows 8 makes me cringe.

I had a client that is a court recorder and her stenotype equipment and software doesn't run (Works in 7 64 bit).

I have also had a few DJ's that found their audio mixing software doesn't work correctly or at all in 8.
