Lenovo X220:

i7-2620M
8 GB DDR3
80 GB Intel mSATA SSD + 320 GB 7,200 HDD

I love this thing. It's extremely sturdy, has great battery, and sports an amazing screen that's even visible in sunlight. It goes everywhere with me!

Thats such a nice machine. I have a few lenovo's, love them.

For repairs I carry around a G560.

Best of luck

I use a lenovo laptop. Its got a somewhat cheap feel to it but its a dualcore with 4 gigs ram, camera, 320 gig drive, dvd burner. Nice screen. The click buttons are kinda noisey but works for 429.oo. No complaints.

If Im diagnosing hardware I fire up a live version of Ubuntu. Works great!

I use Acer emachines D725 . not that robust for tech work but it suits my needs. i use it just for googling and testing connections.. :)

IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads for the past..6 or so laptops.
From the T20 series...to T40 series, to T60p ...and now I'm on a cheaper one, a ThinkPad Edge e420s. I've had a few little X series too.

Thinkpad laptops are like the Ford F-350 pickup truck of laptops...durable as heck.

They get tossed around, dropped, I've had one fall off a ladder from the top as I was running CAT5...hit the concrete floor..it was running, hard drive shot out (wasn't screwed in because I often swapped drives)...put the drive back in, booted up..chckdisk, back in shape and ran a couple of more years.

I use a HP Mini 110-3538TU which is great for my needs, portable, light, great battery life and most importantly not worth much.

2GB Ram
250GB HD
Dual boot with win7 ultimate and Linux Mint 11

Cheers

Dell e6410 i7-M620, 8gb. I am still waiting for SSD's to get cheaper. This is my one main computer used via docking station. I LOVE the ability to hit the eject button and take it with me as needed.

I carry a Dell MINI 9 32gb hdd, 2gb ram running Ubuntu 11.10. It's small easy to carry around to jobs. I also carry Puppy Linux on a usb. I have been using my Mini for three years and never wished I had brought a larger more sophisticated laptop.

I use an acer aspire one with windows xp pro installed. 2gb RAM, does everything I need it to, and, touch wood, haven't had a single problem with it. Couldn't have asked for a better wee laptop

Just ordered 11.6 inch Lenovo Ideapad S205. Had to get smaller one for on-site jobs and S205 was cheap yet powerful enough.

thinkpad (x200) or macbook pro... either one and i'm happy. but really, every three years it's good to upgrade regardless so don't put too much pressure on yourself since time really flies when we're having fun at work

It depends on where you want to use it as well.......

Visits to some of my more remote customers takes me on trips across (the Namib) desert and some very rough terrain. The conditions I work in are often very dusty, dry and hot. For years I used a Panasonic 'toughbook' recomended by an old Army buddy, but when this finally needed replacing, and because I wanted to upgrade to a newer spec, I looked around for some alternatives. I decided on a GETAC B300, which is another very rugged machine, built around a magnesium alloy case and has a shock-mounted hard drive, sealed I/O caps and doors etc, but what really sold it to me is its (optional) sunlight readable display - great for use outdoors in an African environment. So that's my ideal portable machine today, so far performing fantastically and even when my Jeep bounces over the harshest of ground I don't worry that my laptop will give up on me when I need it most - ie when I get to my customer!

So my advice is simply to go with what suits the conditions you are going to be using it in and even though you probably wont need anything as tough as the GETAC you might want to think about the times you are going to chuck the machine and its bag into the boot of the car along with all your other gear. As a road warrior who needs to rely on things working when you get to your destination, sometimes 'rugged' is better than very 'top end performance' - but of course its your choice!
