What are your pursuits outside of technology?

Get a bunch of techies in a group and tech is all you will ever talk about. Now...tell us what you do and enjoy that isn't tech related...

In my family, we all lend a hand producing baked goods for 2 local Farmers Markets. My oldest daughter and wife head that up with everyone else pitching in. That consumes quite a bit of time but is something we can do together.

My oldest son builds hopechests, we have 2 artists working in clay who show at art shows, another son and I are making handcrafted pens on a lathe and my artist son wants to start making bowls turned on the lathe. All 3 boys and I are taking lathe turning lessons once a week to hone our skills.

The youngest 3 girls help with the baking and are making velvet bags to hold the pens we are making.

Sunday is church and family day...no work, just family.

If you didn't notice, I am the only techie in the family...which might not be a bad thing depending on how you look at it.

The wife is a beaver leader, similar to cubs and scouts. I help out at their annual events, and am also the secretary of a local scout group.

We both do dog agility, well the dogs do . Claire runs round telling molly which way to go etc, whilst I usually stand in the middle, and direct her with my voice. Being disabled I cannot run, so do it with the least amount of moving I can. It isn't too hard to do, once you get your dogs focused on you and you alone.

Other then that I use to make hand made wooden toys way back when, sold them at local childres play nursery's etc. I can still turn my hand into making something for the house, but on a professional level, thats all long gone.

As an aside, I saw once on 'How it's made' how they make hand crafted pens. Really nice looking too they were, with the multi coloured woods all stained up.

PS, what are hope chests?, I have never heard of them.

A Hope Chest is a handmade wooden chest a young lady would have to collect things in that will be needed when she gets married. They are also used as blanket chests that you would have at the foot of your bed. He makes them in 100% cedar or lines them in cedar if made in another wood.

No, just amatuerish stuff. We're actually having the landscaping done in my backyard and getting the dog about 600 sq feet of grass where we're probably going to put in some agility equipment.

I've done a few competitions for Frisbee as my dog is good at catching, but gets a bit too proud of himself and prances around with the Frisbee for a minute before bringing it back to me...

Hillwalking is my main leisure activity. I try to get away for a day most weekends. Anything from coastal paths (usually in the winter months) to Munroes if we can get enough of us together ( a Munroe is a mountain in Scotland over 3000 feet ).
I also have this ambition to get back to skiing but that gets complicated.

I'm at work 7am-4pm at my day job..then go right to my shop and I'm there until 8 or 9pm, Saturday I'm at the shop form 11am till 8pm and Sunday from 12-6pm.

Lets see, school takes up a lot of my time right now after work but when I have free time I like to spend it outdoors.

Despite what some may think, I am not a full time technician. Truth be told, my full time job is working as a manager at my Father's recycling business. Recently we've had a major achievement and just recently sold around 9,000 troy oz. of silver pins which are used in solar panels. Legally I can not disclose who we've purchased these pins from, but what I can tell you is that they are a major 2010 Fortune 500 company.

Besides being a manager by day and a technician in the afternoon, I am a game collector at night. I love buying classic games the most, but I seem to have a substantial PS2 game collection as well. Below I've attached a few pictures of my game collection which accounts for around 75% of my collection. I have some newer games which were recently purchased and I also have some ultra-rare or very expensive games still in their original factory seal in a safe deposit box. On of my favorites are an unopened copy of the Legend of Zelda for NES. However, that doesn't fully explain the missing 25%. I also have a large collection of steam games that total around 180, but those are not physical games so photographs wouldn't be sufficient.

took a while to get these photo's together, but believe it or not I've never documented what games I do have and well- I want to get my things insured so I need to have photographic evidence that I have them in good, working order.

My oldest son and I race nitro powered radio controlled offroad buggies.

My oldest son also races 1/24th scale slot cars...I'm too old/slow to race slot cars, so I just wrench on them for him. He's 12.

The youngest son, who's 5, is just starting on both R/C and slot cars.

The wife just enjoys the quiet while we're out playing.

Outside of the wonderful world of tech I get fairly lowtech and oldschool.
I'm working on a booklet / set of booklets to help people learn to read and write with runes.
I'm preparing to make a runestone to place in the front yard (Got the stone, buying tools soon), also looking into learning weapon smithing and/or armor smithing.

As for me, the current non-technology craze is softball. Technology craze is, as if I don't program enough at work, trying to develop my first graphical game. I've been wanting to do that for years.
