Hi all,

I have an HP netbook mini 1000 that the USB mouse would not install. Touchpad mouse works ok. There is nothing wrong with the usb optical mouse as it works on other PC. I have also booted this laptop with Knoppix and the USB external mouse works ok just will not install on windows XP.

I have downloaded and install Microsoft Intellimouse driver with no joy. Uninstall and reinstall RootHub with no joy either. I have also uninstall the built-in touchpad software and makes no difference.
I do not want to format and reinstall the OS which I know it will probably solve the problem. But it would be nice to get the mouse working without reinstalling Windows. USB pen drives and USB external hard drives works pretty well on the same port. Have tried both 2 USB ports available on the laptop.

Any ideas and tips welcome as I am already running out of ideas.

Thanks in advance.

Are you a computer repair technician or an end-user?

Anyway, I think you hit on it by testing the operation of the USB port via a live-boot of Knoppix as well as the functionality of the mouse.

Have you tried a different mouse (also unlikely to work on that laptop?)

If the problem is not Hardware it is __________. The drivers for USB mice come bundled with the _________ system.

I once had a similar issue and re-imaged, which temporarily resolved it until another problem came up days later where the OS would not boot. Turns out the root cause was a bad HDD was bad causing certain files to become unreadable such as mousehid.sys (or XP's equivalent back in the day.)

I am a computer technician, It is a software problem, the same USB mouse works pretty well when booted with knoppix on same laptop so is not a hardware problem, I have already tried a different mouse on the laptop still not working.

Have you uninstalled all Roothubs and also under System devices (any reference to USB Enumerator etc) under safemode?

You dont say if PC actually recognises something plugged in when mouse connected?

Have you tried another mouse from a different manufacturer?

I think we need a bit more info to see where to go from here

Here is your map:

1. Delete the Root Hubs and reboot
2. Check the Hard Drive to see if it is bad (loosing sectors/corrupting programs)
3. System File Checker

4. Mouse from Different Manufacturer
5. Format & Install Windows Again

I had this happen with a USB keyboard once, what a pain! Check services.msc and make sure the HID input service is running. If not, try starting it. If it fails, you might have to copy some files and fix a few registry entries. Let me know if this is your problem and I'll post back with what I have when I get back to my office.

Yes, the laptop recongnises the mouse when plugged in and ask to install the drivers. In the device manager it is flagged USB Optical mouse with the usual Yellow exclamation mark.

Yes, I have tried a different mouse from other manufacturer same result.

Yes I have uninstall all roothub, cannot find any referece to USB Enumerator only Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator and this does not have any uninstall option.

Thanks for your input though

Thanks for your input, just check the services and the HID set to start Automatic and already running. Stop/Start no joy. Have ran sfc /scannow no problem found.
