I am in the perils of yet another dx6000 laptop..

I am having problems with the 2x usb ports on this thing. Customer brings it to me and tells me that her verizon air card wont work but she installs in on another computer and it works just fine.

I am thinking this is a VZW access manager issue, but it doesnt seem to be. VZW cant read the card, so i plug in my usb mouse and it never stops installing the driver for the mouse, it just sits there with the little icon by the clock (vista) spinning and when you try to open my computer, it freezes up. Same thing happens with my usb stick, it just doesnt recognize anything i plug in there usb. It sees that something is there but never installs the driver and never becomes usable.

I have heard of lots of mobo issues with these computers, however i have not seen this issue. This also happens in safe mode, which tells me that it might be hardware related. In device manager, everything appears normal. No yellow marks...

I am sure it is possible for the mobo to have the only two usb slots on it bad, cause it happens in both slots, but seems to easy of an answer. Any ideas on this? The computer is updated with service pack 2, dont see any virus's popping up, although I dont see any anti virus software on there.

Thanks!

good point, i tried it with knoppix and it is reading and i can access files on both my usb stick and the vz access card.

so any ideas on what would be causing this in windows?

It's potentially a driver issue, software issue, BIOS update, and it still could be a hardware problem.

I would run autoruns/msconfig and turn EVERY non MS thing off and try that.

Do you have a spare hard drive you can put in and install windows on?

i will try to download the usb drivers/chipset drivers from hp
isnt using autoruns/msconfig pretty much the same thing as booting in safe mode?

dont have a spare hard drive for a laptop on hand..need to keep one.

It's mostly like safe mode, but safe mode like a different startup profile. Applications/software/drivers can force themselves into the safemode profile. That's my understanding of it.

If you need a spare hard drive, I have several used ones lying around. PM me if you're interested.

well i have noticed another issue, when the laptop sits for a while, in normal mode anyway, it will just freeze up, i can move the mouse, but when i try to click something it is unresponsive. also, after many clicks, it will randomly beep, like a bios beep, not a windows wav file sound whenever i hit the mouse. But the mouse still moves so its not completely locked up..Called customer and she said she was having same issue. I am stumped at how to fix this thing...

I will second a driver problem, even the random lockups can be easily caused by this, nevermind the fact that it works fine under linux, which shows the USB ports are perfectly fine.

You need to figure out which driver is being loaded and causing this, and replace it. Obviously, the USB drivers are a good start. I *think* if you rename them under linux, Winodws will just copy back over the copies. No promise there, so be sure you rename it instead of deleting them.

I also think a repair tool of the week would delete or remove unused USB devices that were installed, might have some weird effect.

Yea I am actually in the process of checking these drivers in the event viewer, but I cant get the thing to quit locking up on my long enough to get there..

I am going to try to boot up with a boot cd, and try to remove the vz access manager. I have got to the point of finding out that a driver pertaining to this is loading with windows, **i think**. I just cant get it to uninstall in windows or safe mode, so I am waiting now for ubcd4win to load so i can remove this program all together and see how windows acts when i boot.

On another note, i really appreciate people that take time out of there day to help me out when I have questions. On behalf of all the people on here that have not been doing this for 10 plus years and are still learning, we greatly appreciate it, and we try to help others out when we might know the answer as well. I know that someone can spend 9-10 hours looking up something on google but it is nice to have some people that you are pretty sure have an idea of what they are talking about to help instead of sifting through a bunch of the same crap over and over again on google. I think that sometimes i see the EXACT same post on many many forums.

Much appreciation everyone! You all are like computer fraternity brothers that are always glad to help!

Don't use HP's drivers. Get the chipset drivers from the chipset manufacturer. Intel, Nvidia, ect. They will be more updated.

Autoruns is way more advanced then MSconfig. Also safemode will still load some drivers that you might want to get rid of. Like USB for instance. Booting from a live CD is your best shoot.

I also think a repair tool of the week would delete or remove unused USB devices that were installed

Do you remember what its called. That would be a nice tool to have.

You mean turn everything non ms off in the logon tab in autoruns? or the driver tab? or both?

I agree with the driver issue, I'd uninstall the current drivers from the laptop and see if there are updated drivers for that particular Verizon Aircard. When you find the updated drivers, install them first, reboot the laptop and then insert the air card and see if it gets recognized by Windows.

My two cents-:)

I have uninstalled the current drivers, all of the usb drivers that are listed in device manager. Whenever I am booting to windows it automatically starts installing the usb drivers for the ports on the pc and if i click on anything it freezes up. I also checked and there are no system restore points to work from either.

Wish I could somehow reinstall these drivers from a boot disk, because with knoppix or hirens, this pc runs great and the usb works just fine.
