USB Flash Drive - Software Protection vs Hardware Protection

I know we discussed this before but we ever resolve the following in terms of .exe on USB flash drivers being infected:
Does software protection that is installed on a USB flash drive protect files from .exe, etc files from being infected by MalWare?
Same question in regards to a 'External write protection switch' as on the Imation Pivot.

It is interesting that I cannot find in Kingston's models that has a hardware switch.
Some have hardware encryption though.

Until you open the encrypted filesystem and then it's open to virus's again. You need to either get an SD card with a lock switch and a small reader, or I believe there is a kangaroo or icruzer with a write protect switch.

Two of my keys just got infected with Virut - Today I ordered two Kanguru flash drives - even their most basic models have a write protect feature. I'll let you know what I think of them once they have arrived.

(none of my wholesale suppliers in this country seem to sell a drive with write protect - so I've had to order these from the USA.)

D&H carries the Kanguru (at least in Canada).

Just do a search on "flash write protect." I myself decided to go for an SDHC card and a small sandisk adapter. The problem with the PQI is that they are horribly slow apparently. I also have my 16gb flash drive packed full, and with the SD card I can get a 32 gb card that should allow me some breathing room.

It's a SanDisk Micromate. They make a micromate for different cards lime memory sticks, so make sure if you shop around you get the sd one. Also the sandisk does heed the sd card write protect switch, which I have read not all card readers do. I don't like that the card sticks out the back and so isn't protected, and the keyring part is that little clear cover that snaps onto either the front or back of the usb reader.

I also ordered a 32GB A-Data card but seem to have gotten a defective one. It craps out after 200mb or so of transfers on three computers with three different card readers. It also won't take and hold a partition table if you eject it and reinsert it.

The sandisk seems to work fine with my other 2gb and 4gb cards, and it was advertised as supporting up to 32gb cards which is the limit of the SDHC standard anyway. I could be wrong but I believe anything recent that supports SDHC should support up to the 32gb limit, correct?
