.url shortcut issue

Hi Guys,

I am having this issue on 5 machines started two weeks ago. The .url shortcut extension lo longer opens with IE. The icons on these shortcuts also changes from the IE icon to a globe. When trying to open the shortcut I get the error.:

The target "" of this Internet Shortcut is not valid. Go to the Internet Shortcut Property sheet and make sure the target is correct.

However when going to the properties for that shortcut I do not get tab to amend the URL. So although its a URL shortcut windows does not think it is. Running the all in one repair tool from tweaking.com fixes this, however I need to find out what is causing it.

I am going to assume windows update, but I need more time to investigate further. Goggling (real word?) the issue shows alot of other people have had this issue, but not determined the root cause.

I've attached a screenshot, I've had to hide some of the icons so the company is not identified.

Appreciate your help.

No dice!

Morning Hugo.

Have you tried the same links using either firefox or chrome, to eliminate if its a IE issue?

Hi Nige, I've tried setting both Firefox and chrome as default and manually associating the extensions to the browsers still no joy. Got 2 more computers with the issues this morning. Checked windows updates no history as there were freshly imaged. This is looking like some sort of side effect from Group Policy.
