Ok, here is network layout:

Laptop running Vista (ethernet cable) -> modem/device -> phone line

Customer says computer was working fine, but after unplugging it to take it somewhere, and then plugging everything back in again, there is no internet access.

IPconfig shows the machine's IP is 56.x.x.x something and the default gateway being 56.x.x.x something too. This isn't a private IP address, so I don't exactly know what's going on.

I can ping 127.0.0.1
I can't ping the computer's IP
I can't ping the default gateway
I can't ping any remote hosts (also tried pinging Google's IP address, no good)

The modem/device says it is getting a DSL/Internet signal (the light is on), but yeah, I reset the thing, and still, no dice. What I'm wondering is, why is the modem/device handing out an IP in the 56.x.x.x range? ARGH!

PS: I ran netsh int ip reset and reset winsock, and flushed the arp cache, and flushed DNS

Since the IP address the computer is getting, is NOT in a private range, I am assuming the computer is getting it's IP directly from the ISP, correct? Is the modem/device faulty? Or am I overlooking something.

edit: I also reset any IE settings, proxies, etc.

56.x.x.x = U.S. Postal Service, NC (NET-USPS1)

now that an ip range you definately not want any PC trying to connect via.

is there anything on the routers logs giving any clues? (using own laptop)

According to wikipedia, the 56.x.x.x range is assigned to the US Postal service.

I don't see any mention of checking the NIC's settings for assigned gateway/IP.... What's there?

Can you access the modems web interface and check the DNS servers? I had some junk on a pc once that modified the DNS server settings on the router.

Hi guys, just finished fixing it. :)

Anyway, I checked the NIC settings, no assigned IPs.

Checked the HOSTS file, just normal.

Checked for malware, nada.

Modem didn't have an interface (LOL), it was a cheap, simplistic piece of junk, but anyway, this is what fixed it.

1) Plugged my lappy in, got a proper IP address.

2) Took problem computer, booted into Safe Mode, issue fixed!

3) Booted back into normal mode, disabled AV suite firewall, problem persisted.

4) Booted into Safe Mode, disabled AV (F-Secure) items, rebooted.

5) Fixed

A recent update to the F-Secure engine must have borked the network functionality...really weird that it would assign an IP like that though, totally threw me off at first, but thank God, two hours later, it's fixed. :)
