Ok, here is network layout:
Laptop running Vista (ethernet cable) -> modem/device -> phone line
Customer says computer was working fine, but after unplugging it to take it somewhere, and then plugging everything back in again, there is no internet access.
IPconfig shows the machine's IP is 56.x.x.x something and the default gateway being 56.x.x.x something too. This isn't a private IP address, so I don't exactly know what's going on.
I can ping 127.0.0.1
I can't ping the computer's IP
I can't ping the default gateway
I can't ping any remote hosts (also tried pinging Google's IP address, no good)
The modem/device says it is getting a DSL/Internet signal (the light is on), but yeah, I reset the thing, and still, no dice. What I'm wondering is, why is the modem/device handing out an IP in the 56.x.x.x range? ARGH!
PS: I ran netsh int ip reset and reset winsock, and flushed the arp cache, and flushed DNS
Since the IP address the computer is getting, is NOT in a private range, I am assuming the computer is getting it's IP directly from the ISP, correct? Is the modem/device faulty? Or am I overlooking something.
edit: I also reset any IE settings, proxies, etc.
