Hi guys.
I've been looking into problems at a golf club.
It has been beset with DNS issues,
some sites load,
some just sit there waiting to load.

The setup is quite convoluted. We have 2 PC's and a server connected via a 16 port hub.

From this, we also have another router (on a different subnet) offering wifi to the lounge area.

When firing up the PC's (2 office machines), it takes a good 30 seconds to connect to the net.

I've performed numerous scans via d7ii, so I don't think its virus related. Both machines run Emsisoft antimalware/antivirus plus Malwarebytes

The current modem/router is a "domestic" netgear job, which connects to a 16 port hub.

The checks I made omitted this hub to keep things simple. I plugged the PC's straight into the modem router. Nothing else. Broadband was very sluggish.

Speed checks all suggest the speed is acceptable at 5 meg download. Line checks and speed tests via the ISP (Plusnet) were also acceptable.

I believe the modem/router is the weak link here, and I would appreciate your thoughts on a suitable replacement.

Remember plusnet are heavy traffic shapers.

I would probabably use either a dreytek or billion router as test scenario see if makes a difference (always worthwhile having at least one of those two in carry around kit for testing purposes compared to cheapo domestic crap and as only 2 PCs you could happily use one of them as the fulltime router).

And agree with Andy above re the WiFi portion.

+1 for Draytek. Very configurable and I recently replaced an old 'Dlink' with one and got an instant (and sustained) 2 meg increase in d/l speed.

I replaced my router and immediately got a 20% increase in speed. That was a couple of years ago. I have an Asus RT-N66U

Cheers guys.
I considered billion initially, however.....
I installed a billion for another customer a couple of years ago. And whilst it hadn't presented any problems, I've always felt a bit uneasy about it.

Dreytek is one in the frame, but I've no experience with them.

Andy suggested a bintec, which is a manufacturer I've never heard of.

Thanks for the replies. I'll dig into these a little deeper.

i must be the only person who gets more issues with dreytek than billion routers (not that get much with either once they are setup). so much so that billion is our router of choice for our office network.

I think I must be the only person with a serious dislike for Draytek routers here. I really do regard them as 'slightly superior consumer grade.' Really don't regard them as biz grade.

Andy
