UK Supermarket PC Repair

If you give it a shot then let us know.
I bet they keep address records and limit the number of repairs per address.
I will send one to them next time I get a mobo/hdd issue where the client can wait a week for the repair.

If they get good pricing on mobo's they might end up breaking even on replacements, and making decent profit on the screen invertors etc.

Will do, wont be this week, I'm away visiting family till next Monday.

As for the limiting, maybe but as its fixed pricing, what are they limiting?

I dont think they would. All they could do is return any that is going to be a loss for them. But that I think they will absorb initially to get their service out that they are great and fix nearly all sent to them. Slowly price will creep up.

another thing is what happens if i have a faulty Nvidia GTX680 Graphics card and a I7 processor in my pc? is that worth sending away for £59.99 :)

500 graphics card and a 300 processor :)

Not sure how they work these out.

Certainly looks like a good time to buy faulty parts on ebay, could be a cheap way to build up a new inventory in the workshop.

They will probably work like this;

Pay money for laptop repair 'fixed pricing' and if the mobo(or part) is dead, they will ring you and say you have to pay a 'top-up' as referred to on their FAQ or just pay the 'fixed price' and have it returned unfixed.

But what about the no fix no fee they state? simple really.. if they cant fix it they wont charge. If they can fix it but u dont wanna pay for the extra parts then that doesnt fall under their no fix no fee - you just pay what you originally gave them.

Seems like a really good way to rip customers off without explaining to them whats actually going on.

Oh and im sure they'll eat the cost of parts that don't cost much.. cables, adapters etc. all that will fal under the "we fix most problems within the fixed fee even if some parts are needed" or whatever it states.

These guys are in business to make money. I wouldn't hold your breath on them replacing/repairing a main board etc.

CraiGDaniel - it doesnt say that in the terms - It says nothing about replacing parts but does say that its a full repair which means parts. For example i have a dell laptop that uses a screen that costs £195 to get from dell. some sort of High Res screen and full HD would they replace that for £99 if not how get they get out of it. it does not state they are not putting parts in the repairs but it also does not state that they are.

I think alot of customers will be abit gutted to have that phone call,

Ok snippet from the website

"The fixed price includes all labour, transport, parts and VAT. In the event that the cause of failure is due to liquid, physical damage and/or a defective battery, we will endeavour to repair the unit within the fixed repair price, however on occasions a top-up charge may be applicable. Any top-up charge will be communicated to you by telephone or e-mail. If you decide not to go-ahead with the repair the fixed repair price will be refunded. Apple and Lenovo computers are not covered by the fixed price."

Not quite sure how they can offer free pickup, diagnosis and return delivery even if you decide you can't afford the top-up charge, they'll just send it back at no cost? Can't be right.... ??

Im guessing the amount of customers that will say £100 for a new mobo? ok might aswell as its there will outweigh the customers that say no.

true also you pay up front. So once you have paid and they say o you need to top up £30 most will go ok may aswell to get it back fixed.

" however on occasions a top-up charge may be applicable" - What does that mean? if its a big part you will have to pay?

I can only assume - if it's a dead mobo i imagine you would get a call similar to this

" Hi yeh the mobo's dead, £80 for a new one labours included in fixed price, but as stated a topup charge may be applicable and it is in this case"

Customers probably not going to say no, unless they physically do not have the cash

From the T%C
6.8 If you are informed that a Top-Up Charge will be payable and decide not to go ahead with the Repair, we will refund the Fixed Price and return the unrepaired Item to you in accordance with paragraph 5.1.1.

Nothing to lose then.....

Look at slide 5 on their website. "Mercom on behalf of Tesco Tech Support". http://www.mercom.org/ I think?

I believe Mercom used to do most of the board level repairs for DSGi up until a year or 2 ago. Maybe the plan is to repair motherboards and not replace them. This would certainly allow them to keep laptop repairs under £99 as opposed to replacing boards and is probably why they say that liquid damage is likely to cost more,

Disappointed is the word. Running small shops out of business with Tesco Express and Tesco Metro, now it's on to small service businesses, such as computer repair, plumbers, electricians.

When will it ever end!!

Not one bit worried about this. I am angry yes but not worried. Tesco has a reputation problem in the UK now. The general public are sick of them expanding in all areas.

Most of their side businesses like this flop, look at Tesco cars it was a major major flop. So will this will be and I can see them generated lots of complains about unhappy people paying £90 or what ever just to be told the laptop is not repairable you will need to buy a £300 motherboard.

How long has this service been operating? I thought they are supposed to be concentrating on their core supermarket business but maybe they have not learnt their lesson.

Either way I shall boycot Tesco for the next few weeks :D
